Ballistics
Can anyone explain the ballistics of what affect the length of the barrel has on the muzzle velocity of a fired bullet? (i.e., would the same cartridge have a different muzzle velocity in a shorter barrel than it would in a longer barrel, and if so, why?) Thanks in advance, Joepoidog

There may be a place to find this out, so any help would be appreciated. I am wondering how far, under the most ideal conditions such as a 45 degree angle, no trees, etc,,, how far a bullet will travel?
I am interested in a long rifle .22, .223, 7.62/39, 9 mm handgun, and 12 guage slug.
Can any go beyond five miles? Three?0 -
My program won't work below 200 fps.
Angle of departure 45deg.
223=2800yards at 258 fps
7.62x39=3000 yards at 320 fps.
9MM= 850 yards at 230 fps
Can't find B.C. For .22RF are 12 GA slug.

you are looking at around 1 mile max on any of those rounds unless they catch a good tail wind [:D] 0 -

I just read an article in the American Rifleman in reference to bullet distance.THEY say that the .30-06 M2 ball bullet,weighing about 152grs,will travel 3,400 to 3,500 yds.The 7.62mm M80 bullet,which is a sharp pointed FMJ boattail,weighing about 148grs,has a maxium range of about 4,200yds.They also say that 150gr sporting bullets will travel some-what less than the military bullets.I know that these are not the calibers you inquired about but it will give you a vague idea on distance. 0 -
Not that it makes any difference but a mile is about 1760 yards.
