Cleaning a Rem Nylon 66
Need advice on cleaning a Rem Nylon 66. I know these are not the most fun guns to put back together. How would you go about cleaning the action? I'm also concerned about using gunscrubber and getting it on the plastic.

My first rifle was a Nylon 66. I left at my mother's house and forgot about it for almost 15 years. When she reminded me it was there, I thought, oh crap, it is probably a mess.
I took the receiver cover off, hosed it down with Gunscrubber and a toothbrush, wiped it, oiled it and cleaned the barrel.
It shoots just fine. Those rifles are almost indestructible, unless you take the receiver cover off and mess with the insides.
Hang on to it.

I found some takedown instructions online. It says to pull back the bolt, inspect for loaded round, put on safety, and with the action cocked, firmly remove the bolt handle by pulling to the right.
Well, mine didn't want to budge. I don't want to break it. Do you pull it with the bolt back, or forward? Is there a special notch or alingment?0 -
Okay, then.
First, make REAL SURE the rifle is unloaded-check down the buttstock tube with a straightened coathanger, which will push any sticking rounds out the chamber.
Next, remove the 2 screws on the side of the receiver cover.
Now pull the charging handle back about an inch or so and pull straight out perpendicular to the barrel- it might help to stick a popsicle stick between the bolt and barrel so it doesn't slam shut when you pull the handle off.
Now slide the receiver cover straight up and off.
If you want to clean the breechface where it is; no further disassembly is required.
Otherwise, flip the little metal spoon-thingie on top of the bolt toward the buttstock, unscrew the only screw on the underside of the barrel. Notice that little flat-side-up barrel band? The barrel is held in place with it.
If you want to remove the barrel, pull towards the muzzle and twist on the barrel about a 1/2 turn, an the barrel band will rise out of the stock.
Reassembly is pretty basic.
If you have trouble getting it all back together; you have:
A-you let the bolt slide past the connector-use that popsicle stick to push down on the flat piece of metal just beneath and behind the bolt while pushing the bolt back (as if to cock it)
B-you have the barrel band reversed
C-you need a third hand; take it to me and I'll never take it apart again[:D]

Yeah, letting the bolt go too far forward is a common thing that happens. Then the connector loses its downpressure and rises as it normally is held down by the bolt which slides over it and holds it down during operation. This can be very frustrating when re-assembling and the third hand is almost necesary!! This is why most folks are loathe to take their Nylons apart again after they go through this. I have heard that more than a few give up and take it to the 'smith to put back together. I was too hard-headed and eventually figured it out. Best of luck with yours. I wouldn't give up my Nylons for anything.

Teamblue: Right on target. Did the same thing, even though the NRA
book on dissasembly states that many are taken apart but few get back
together by the owner. But after many thousands of rounds and 20
years I felt it needed it. Spent almost all day getting it back
together properly. I gave this one to my son on his 14th birthday
and he is now 48 so I'm thinking its about time again soon and
am not looking foreward to it. Think I will try the Gun Scrubber
route first.0
