Colt Model 1861 Special Musket, made from 1861-1865, about 100,000 made. Lock plate marked "U.S./COLT'S PT F.A. MFG CO./HARTFORD CT.", date of manufacture marked on the lock plate behind the hammer. U.S. inspector's marks on the left side of the barrel breach. The hammer and the breach of the barrel are different then other Model 1861 rifled muskets. The finish of the metal parts are white, except for the rear sight and the nipple which are blue. An American eagle is stamped on the side of the bolster below the nipple. In the shape that you describe, I would think that your musket would bring between $650-$850 depending on how big a chunk of the stock is missing and the other overall condition.
