Model differences
Would someone please explain the difference in S&W Models 422 and 622? I saw a 422 at a gun show and now I want one. Thanks in advance.

Y'know, have you looked at "the other Smith"-the 2206?
It is silhouette accurate, holds 12rounds, has the same/better feel to the trigger, easily adjustable rear sight, and costs almost $100 less!

The only real difference between the 422 (blue or black - whatever you'd classify them) and the 622 (silver) is the finish. Both of their frames made from alloy, but the slides are steel. The 622's slide is stainless. S&W also makes a model 2206 which is identical to the 622 model, but has a stainless steel frame instead of alloy. It is heavier and I think the 2206 loses the nice balance/weight combination of the 422/622. Another S&W model that has a similar feel to it is the model 41. To the best of my knowledge, they still sell the 41, whereas the 422,622, & 2206 models are discontinued. The 10 round versions of the magazines can be used interchangably between all 4 models. If you buy one, I'd spend the extra $20 or so and get the target model with the adjustable rear sight.
I have one of each of the models. They are fine guns!

Thanks for all the replies. I really liked the 422, guess I need to check around some more. I think I also liked the different design of the 422. When were the different models manufactured? 422/622? 2206? and I know the 41 is still made. How about the 22A/S compare to these others also? Just wondering. Thanks again,

The 422 was made 1987 - 1996, the 622 & 2206 was made 1990 - 1996.
They were made with either a 4.5" or 6" barrel (I personally like the balance of the longer barrel). Again, if you get one, get the target model so you'll have an adjustable rear sight. The earlier ones were available with a 12 shot clip (has orange follower), whereas the later ones were sold with a 10 round (black follower). Pachmeyer makes a nice rubber wrap-around grip that will fit all 3 of these models.

It doesn't seem to make the recoil any different by having the barrel slightly lower in the gun. The light-weight alloy frame is light and doesn't absorb as much as the heavier 2206 model, but being a .22lr, neither one is bad and allows very quick follow-up shots.
I think these .22 semi-auto's are great... I have one of each model (still wanting to get a 41) - and I no longer have any other model .22 pistol.0
