300 wsm recoil???
Had a guy tell me that the wsm cartridges had less felt recoil.
I have looked at balistics and they are almost the same how do reduce
recoil and get the same energy out of a 180g bullet? besides muzzle brakes??

I honestly can't tell ya why, but mine kicks like a .270, or a .30-06 at the worst...........nothing like a .300 win mag when it comes to recoil. I was told that it had something to do with the width of the casing, the powder being burned in a wider space, I don't know if this is accurate or not, but it definitely kicks less than I would have thought..........my buddy liked mine so much, he bought one. My buddy is 5'6" and weighs 150 lbs. and loves his.

hitman, Not sure I understand it either but I have shot 4 different rifles in 300WSM while working on them and have been very impressed with the "lack of" felt recoil! I was also impressed with the accuracy of 4 factory rifles (3 Brownings and 1 Winchester) for out of the box guns! I have never felt the need for a 30 caliber, but would have to consider this one if I wanted one! I would rank the felt recoil in the 270 range! Now does that mean that the 270WSM is going to be down to the 25-06 or 6mm range? I don't know haven't tried one yet. As far as ballistics go on the 300, 7mm, 270 WSM's, the 270 seems to be the most efficient of the bunch but you don't hear much about it! Always wanted to try the 257WSM out but passed on my chance to build one! Probably shoulld have! And I will rankle some fur with this comment, I think 30-06 is one of the most unpleasant SOB known to the shooting community as far as felt recoil!! I have yet to shoot one that I would want to own! I don't ecall ever shooting a 300 mag. but I would tend to think the recoil would be more than the 30-06. Please correct me if I'm wrong

I believe the heavier the rifle the less felt recoil because the rifle is absorbing some recoil.

Rifle Weight * Velocity = Bullet weight * Velocity + Powder Weight * Velocity (the formula is a little more complex than that, but those are the variables involved). That will give you ACTUAL recoil.
FELT recoil is influanced by the stock design, shooter fit, balance of the weapon, recoil padding, etc. and is very subjective.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
By coincidence i've just completed two identical rifles in .300 wsm and .300 win. mag. same barrel, stock, action, scope mts. ect. just to compair the two cals. i'll keep you posted on the results 0 -
GHD; mY experiance has been a little different than yours, I think the 270s sharp recoil is unpleasant, but a 30-06 is nothing to worry about. I've shot a lot of both and can't explain that one either!!

Tail Gunner has it on the muzzle (nose). Actual Recoil must follow preordained laws of Physics. Peroid.!
Felt Recoil is so very subjective to each shooter.
Even raising the scope from low to medium, to high can greatly effect a shooter's opinion of recoil. Now, throw in what Tail Gunner has listed and you have a "Recoil Stew".
Won't go there for now, but a stocks; single drop, double drop, reverse drop, fall away, material all can be added to the "Recoil Stew".
Even noise has a psyco affect.

Here are my thoughts on the felt recoil of the 300wsm. I shot a 7mm-08 ack. imp. for a few years. To make a long story short it was a pocket 7-mag with no recoil. Lost a large buck(170 class) to a batch of bad bullets but blamed the rifle. Bring in the 300 wsm. Mine was a browning a-bolt hunter with a 4-14x40 nikon scope. Accuracy sucked. Bare in mind I am an accuracy freak. I accept nothing short of at least .5moa from my hunting loads. The first shot produced a cut over my right eye. So was it caused from excessive recoil. Probably not. I have shot a friends 300 win. mag. model 70 quite a bit. It produces a firm steady push when fired. My wsm jumped back sharply and came up in the front end. So needless to say I dont have it any more. BUT. I have a savage 12bvss on order in nothing less than 300wsm. In a rifle with a fairly straight pull stock the recoil should be no problem at all for the general shooting population. And yes recoil will increase when bullet weight increases. But the 180 should not present a problem. In a good rifle(and to me a browning a-bolt is not one of them) with a stock that doesnt have a lot of drop the recoil should feel lighter than a 30-06.
