Remington 17
Just got a Rem 700-rem 17 cal.(1971 gun that has had 3 shells fired-still have the other 17). Now my buddy tells me they "foul up" (get a dirty bore very quickly) after very little shooting. As I'm not a fan of excessive bore cleaning, what should I expect? Should I go with reloads in hopes of finding a "clean" load or should I go for a different caliber.

Whether a seventeen bore fouls or not depends on more things than its size. In other words in depends more on the smoothness of the bore and the load fired thru it. Neither of my seventeens have been bad foulers. What does matter though is that when fouling occurs or starts to occur, it will affect the smaller calibers more quickly than larger ones, hence the "reputation". I would highly recommend keeping the rifle and learning what it is best used for, reload if you want to AND keep an eye on bore cleanliness, which you should do with any rifle. They are extremely fun and usually very accurate. Used properly and cleaned when needed, you will really start to enjoy it. Contrary to what you hear in gunshops and magazines there are tens of thousands of 17 cal rifles being used and are not all that uncommon. (Most)of the bad bore fouling info seems to come from those who don't own one or don't know what a cleaning patch is. 0 -
non; 09arg hit the nail on the head. I've got the same gun 700bdl and mine is a shooter that I will never get rid of.
The only problem I have is with finding bullets to re-load, not very many options that I've seen. I would really like to find some molly coated bullets to try. Antbody got any?

AS ABOVE, I'VE OWNED THREE OF THEM AND THEY SHOT VERY WELL, CLEANED ABOUT EVERY FIFTY RDS. AND ALL WAS WELL. 0
