COLT LIGHT 30-06
The new, but now discontinued Colt Lightweight 30-06, with 24" Bbl and synthetic stock, who made 'em, what scope mounts fit, and how good a shooter are they?

Colt was supposed to have bought out Ultra Light Arms and used their machines, etc. for making the rifles. They were going to sell them at a much reduced price compared to what Ultra Light was getting for them. Do not know what they changed from UL manufacture to cheapen them up, but the whole thing flopped and Melvin Forbes (I believe he was the owner of UL) had to step back in and repo his stuff.
Do not know for sure, but believe that the mounts for a 700 Remington would fit. Can not help on the accuracy thing, have never seen one or talked to anyone who has had one.0 -
Colt made a few changes, but at the price they were a great deal for a ultra light type rifle. I bought some back then.
When they cut the company loose (they screwed up-again), back to Malcom, they dumped their inventory.
They really cut the price, so they were an absolute steal. I bought some more.
Early versions without pre bolt recall modifications, will become somewhat of a Colt collector item
A special one piece base & ring combination was standard, based on the Rem 700/Weatherby MK 5 receiver specs.

Thanks gents, sounds like an interesting hunting rifle. Colt has tried to market long guns off and on for over a hundred years, never do seem to keep 'em catalogged very long. I doubt these will ever be a collector, but might make a good shooter.

I bought two of these guns - 30-06 & 7mm Mag- Both had scope ring with them in the boxes. Shot the .06 & it did well. Have not shot the 7mm Mag yet. I'll probably get the hankering for something different and trade it off?

Little shooting tip: These are very good ultra light weight rifles, but are particular to the loads just like most ultra light weights. For best accuracy, try different grain weights, and brands.
Since most shots with rifles like these are less than 300 yds, the extra expense of BTHP's won't increase accuracy that much, therefore aren't generally worth it.
I'm keeping one very early production unaltered '06 in the box for future value, and the second (boltfactory done)will rechambered it to some other cartridge, sometime,.....early spring brings on many 'honey do' jobs.

Sorry Pack Rat- I already had the hankering on the /06, and traded it in with a couple of others on a a citori o/u lightning---- I still have the 7mm Mag (in the box w/papers & rings). Waiting for another hankering??
