WILL 25/06 KILL WATERBUFFALO?
I remember reading years back that when Roy WEATHERBY developed his wonderfull .257 WBY, he took it to Africa and killed buff with it. Does anyone remember what weight bullet he used? Or for that matter what kind of damage it did, and the reaction of the buff to the shot?
I've shot many deer and antelope with the 25/06 over the years, and some elk, but have never been impressed with the killing power. I always used the Nosler 117 gr or the Hornady 120 HP. Penetration is always 18" or better, but the animals always seem to ignor the shot for several seconds until they fall over dead. Some antelope have run 100 yards or better. So what bullet did Roy use? I know it wasn't some fancy smancy bullet, Nosler didn't even invent his bullets at the time.

I suspect that if the professional hunter would allow it, a .257 WBY would do it. I think there are laws as well that state the calibres allowed for each animal. I would think you'd just annoy a Buff with a .25-06 though. A buff is the last thing I'd want to annoy. They are one of the few beasties that'll track you down and get even. Weatherby's site has a book about their history, that may tell you about this. 0 -
Well a .22 lr could conceivably kill even a bull elephant or water buffalo if you shot it from a foot away straight in they eye or ear. Same with the 25/06 though I would surely want a LOT bigger cartridge if I were going to try it. As I prefer Mausers over double guns I would probably go with a .416 Rigby built on a German or Czech action. I've never hunted large game and admit I don't know what I am talking about but that is my gut feeling.

I think there is a .40 caliber minimum in several countries in Africa that allow big game hunting. Also I believe when hunting you need to be with a guide and that guide usually has a BIG rifle to back you up. 0 -
If an arrow can kill one a 25-06 will.
I know a guy who got one with a bow.

As big of a 25-06 fan as I am, A man's gotta know his limitations! And if I was going to shoot one of those beasts, I'd opt for one of those "kills on both ends" calibers...375 on up!!!! As far as your experiences with killing power of the 25-06 on deer sized game, it is quite different than most of the people I know and myself! Pretty much a "DRT" gun! Dead Right There!! Ask varmit hunter on this forum about it. He has a unique way of explaining his beleifs about the 25-06. GHD 0 -
Are we talking water buffalo or cape buffalo. If water buffalo I don't think there is a caliber limit for these in Australia and Asiain countries that allow hunting them. The cape buffalo could be taken with a 25-06 if it were legal. But I don't remember ever reading about Rpy doing such a feat.

Nope, use at least a 30.06 or bigger.
Me, I prefer to shoot Coke & Beer cans, they aren't as prone to chase you down, but they are sly about my dodging bullets.

There's one hell of a lot of differance between a Cape Buffalo and a Water Buffalo...And as for caliber...? I can only speak from experiance..The Cape Buffalo has a Heavy Boss protecting His Forehead..and it measures in at about 4 to 5 inches thick...To drop a Cape in His Tracks a Heavy Solid Core Bullet is required..unless you have Suicidal tendencies.....!!!!!! My Buff was dropped with a 12.7X70 or better known as the .500 Schuler or .500 Jeffery....This is one of the only Critturs known to Track down a Hunter and kill Him......The Water Buff is almost the same as a Domestic Cow...not anywhere as dangerous as the Cape....altho He can become dangerous in a close situation...........As for using a light caliber Bullet on one of these critturs....Only an inexperianced person would even consider it.....

My mistake or assumption. I saw buffalo and Africa and thought Cape Buffalo as I associated Water Buffalo to Asia, India, and Egypt. 0 -
