scope on m1 carbine..
recently purchased an after market scope mount for my m1.
mounted an old weaver scope i had. cranked on the elevation
setting to its max.. appears to still be shooting over
1 foot high at 25 yds.. do i need a different type scope or
different ring mounts? any ideas..

It depends.
What maker M1 carbine do you have, and what make & model scope mount are you trying to use?
The best setup for the M1 carbine is the B-Square clamp mount on the barrel with an extended eye relief scope. There is one company that makes a mount that attaches to the rear sight dovetail for use with a rifle scope, but that only works well with a USGI carbine.

SCOPE RINGS CAME WITH THE SCOPE MOUNT.. IT IS THE TYPE OF MOUNT THAT FITS IN THE DOVE TAIL.. CARBINE IS GI ISSUE...

Kind of hard to diagnose these problems without examining the firearm, but were I to gamble I'd bet your scope is either (1) gone bad, or (2) unsuited for the task. I'm not sure what you mean by "cranked on the elevation setting to its max", because to me that would indicate that you raised the elevation to it's highest, in which case one would expect it to shoot very high--and one foot over at 25 yds. would be about right. Have you tried adjusting the elevation in the other direction? Have you tried bore-sighting the scope? It is possible that your scope, being older, is not capable of adjustment at 25 yds., which is usually considered pretty close range for scope usage.0 -

turning the elevation down as far as it would go.. i was inform
at one time by a gunsmith that i should sight in my rifles at
25 yds and that should put them very close at 100 and then i could
fine tune them..i did try bore sighting and could not get the cross
hairs to come down to center point..

Well..I'm sure you understand my point about some scopes not being made to zero at 25 yds. So, in this case, and were I you, I would try to zero at 100 yds. before giving up on the scope as defective. The fact that it will not zero on a bore sighter, though, is suspicious. You can also try shimming the rear of the scope, either beneath the mount (if possible--it may not be, if it is affixed rigidly in the issue sight dovetail) or between the scope and the bottom of the rear ring. Try using cardstock paper--like that which file folders or 3x5 cards are made from. That will force the scope up in the rear, down in the front---and it only takes a little to make a noticable difference down range. And, on the brighter side, most scope companies will fix a defective scope, even if older (or replace it with a newer one), for free or a very small fee if you ship it to them. 0 -
You guys and your scopes on a carbine. Geez. Put a spirit level on top of the adjusting turret. Is it level in both directions? If not take it off, put in a machined round bar and do the same thing. Is it level? Yes, then you likely need to shim the scope in the rings to get it level. No, then shim the rings/mount to get it level. Once the mount and scope are level tighten the screws. First the left front, then the right rear, then the right front, then left rear. Check often to be sure the scope stays level in both directions. Re-bore sight. Try it on the range. Scopes on a Carbine? Sheesh! Buggers up the balance, so it does. 0 -
Dittos, Ray! I'd ask if it was shot before with just iron sights, and if it was; did it shoot high? ( I know, I know, but sometimes...)
I'd take it out to an indoor range and tape a yardstick to the scopes' tube, and one to the barrel. If you've fairly well approximated the centerline of both; you can measure between them at both ends to see if they're (roughly) parallel.
Otherwise(and I think scopes on a 200yd cartridge are optimistic); go shoot at 50 yds., and continue to adjust the scope after every round(you'll only need a box) until it finds the paper-the scope's reticle may not move at all, or it could be that the direction for adjustment is somehow reversed.
How big a target are you using at 25yds.? (HINT: use a can at 20ft. and just point it at the can and see what's in the scope)
