Target dot size on a Simmons scope
Good day,
I will try to make this confusing question as simple as possible; On a Simmons 800116 scope (8-32x44, Japanese)it has a 1/8th inch target dot. At least that is what some info appears to relate. If true, what is the perceived size of the dot if focused on a blank target at 100 yards at 32x ?
I shoot 1" shoot-n-c's at 100 yards. I want a scope with a dot much smaller than the target. Does anyone have any practical experience with this scope or a similar version ? I have heard that at 32x the scope dot will appear... appear to be about 4 inches (32 times 1/8th inch). Another comment is that it would be 1/2 inch, (4 times 1/8th as the shortest focal length is 8x and 32 is 4 times that). I have heard 1/8th inch.
Any insights appreciated. Sorry if this question is a bit obtuse.

If that is true, then the dot is in the second focal plane. Second focal plane reticles grow as the magnification is increased. The reticles which do not grow, or can be used to range targets at any power range, are first focal plane reticles. I don't know of any illuminated dot reticles in the first focal plane, but I havn't really looked for any. You may try seaqrching the manufacturers and asking that question to help you decide on a brand which will fit your purposes.

It is supposed to be 1/8" at any power since it is in the second focal plane.
Second focal plane reticles do not 'grow',but targets do in size as compared to first focal plane(more accurate)in which both 'grow' the same at the same time as power is changed.
If, you find that at different powers the POI changes, it in many cases isn't you. It's the scope adjustment technique, and even more likely the scope due to the ultra high magnification, second focal plane placement, and manufacturing.
There are quite a few maker of first focal plane scopes, ane even some that offer illuminated scopes that really work. Most are European, and one Japanese.

Ranging must be at a known power, on a known target size regarless of maker.
If for example a scope ranging is to be done at 22X, and it is 'ranged' on any other power, the distance will be wrong. It can still be figured out, but it won't be the same as the scopes scale.
The most accurate ranging will always be done thru the first focal plane, especially on variable powered scopes.

G&G, how does that premier reticle change work? I beleive he told me that he could change the focal plane and the mil dot reticle could be used to range on any power, (obviuosly the target size must be correctly estimated). Any idea of the physics behind that set-up? Or did I totaly misunderstand the conversation? (NOT out of the relm of possibility)[:I] Thanks

JustC, reticles can be change, just a matter of knowing what to do, how to do it, and having the proper tools. but it's alot easier than it sounds.
It can be done for any power you want especially on fixed powers.
Once you determine the target size, ie. average head, overall height, chest to brisket, you then determine shooting distances you want. A few 'simple' calculations (ha-ha)and knowing the scope you can then go to work. It isn't rocket science, but it's close.
On variables like your Night Force some powers (like 22X) are better to use due to the change in power vs the amount of inner movement of the erector lenses. Other big reasons are many shooters find certain powers like 20,22,24X are not too overpowering that cause loss of Field Of View, and Adjustment Run Out. Theres more but I'll stop here.

Working on it every weekend. I have spent the last 3 entire weekends loading and shooting. I have quite some time behind the nightforce so far, and she is gonna work out REALLLLL NIIIICE. You weren't kidding about the crispness vs the other top names. I have your directions printed out as a reference, and I use them as my guide to getting the perfect picture.[8D]
You were also spot on about stretching the lens covers. If I stretch them really hard, they will fit between the scope objective and the barrel. Gotta love that .064" clearance.[:D]
