extra magazines for a Steyr M40?

Unfortunately, for some illogical reason, designers of new pistols refuse to design them so they accept a magazine of which there is already a large pool of pre-ban high capactiy magazines in existence. The M40 is one of those mistakes. There are no magazines except the factory originals. Or are there?

When I got my M40, I thought the magazine looked familiar and, after a little research, found that the M40 magazine body is identical in shape to a Smith & Wesson Sigma magazine body shape. Only the latch hole is in a different place.

To test proof of concept, I loaded a Sigma magazine and taped it into the Steyr. It worked perfectly. I bought some extra Sigma magazines, cut a new latch hole in the right place and now have a M40 that holds 15+1! The magazines still work in the Sigma so the legalities are covered. I assume the 9x19 Sigma magazines will work the same way in a Steyr M9 as well, but I have not tried it.

    Does this help?

The Judge as usual is exactly right. The Sigma mag works. I do have the factory 10rd mags available for $28, new on the card. I don't know if that helps. Just for reference, a factory S&W mag will run over $30 for the 10rd. I have the S&W Sigma high capacity mags available as well, but there you are looking at even more money. LRARMSX@MCHSI.COM

    JudgeColt,

Thanks for the info, that does help alot. At least now I know that I can use another magazine with this gun ( with a little modification!)

If you don't think you have it made here, try going someplace else.
