I recently purchased several boxesz of 44 spl and 44 mag re-loads from a gun shop that closed down a looooong timne ago. In the 44 spl marked bag I found a number of reloaded rounds that are head marked "Western 44 XL" they appear to be a necked down 44 to about 40 or 41 calibur. Any info as to what these are would be appreciated.

The .44-40 Extra Long cartridges that you found are the .44-40 shot cartridge loaded with a lead bullet. At one time (1914-1916), Stevens chambered their Model 101 Featherweight for the .44XL and the .44-40 shot cartridge. Hopefully, Iconoclast will see this post and Iam sure that he can give you more information then I can. These cartridges are of intrust to collectors and if you don't want them, Iam sure that you would not have any trouble getting rid of them.
