H&R 410 Handy Gun ?
Is there any way to register a 410 Handy Gun now ? Thanks

I am sorry to tell you that at this time there is simply no way for an individual to register a Handy-Gun. There were over 50,000 of these little guns made and they used many parts from the old H&R Model 1915 shotgun. Production of the smooth bores started shortly after WWI and ended in 1934 with the passage of the National Firearms Act. The price at that time was around $16. There are a number of variations in both .410 and 28 gauge- the .410 being far more common. The original NFA Tax on these H&R Handy-Guns was a whooping $200- a fortune in 1934.
When the Gun Control Act of 1968 went into effect there was an ammnesty period during which time all NFA weapons could be registered with no questions asked. This was the final chance to register a Handy-Gun and the law makes no provision to do so now. An unregistered Handy-Gun is contraband and the owner riskes 10 years in prision and a $10,000 fine. As I understand it from friends who are NFA collectors and fellow firearms dealers, there are fewer than 6,000 Handy-Guns registered- about 10% of the production run. I really doubt that the other 90% were destroyed...I think most of them are in the same situation as your Handy-Gun- sitting up in someones attic.

That's interesting as hell. My ol' Grandad had one that he passed down to my uncle in the late seventies. I remember some talk of him picking it up on a trip to Arizona, but never heard what year. Hell, the Codger was so old (Gramps, that is) he probably got it before they got their Statehood!
Anyway, I was around twelve before I was allowed to touch-off a few rounds. Maybe they shoulda made me wait another year or so. Damn thing tried to jump out of both hands the first time. As I recall, you'd be lucky to hit a barn door at 20 ft. - but you'd scare the hell out of anything within 200.
I'll pass along the info to my uncle, just so he doesn't take it to a gunshow and get himself in trouble.

There continues to be talk of another amnesty so maybe there is hope for those piecies lying around in no-man's land. 0
