Best loads for 270
I was loading 270 with 130 gr. sp and 44gr. 4895, went to 130gr. hornady SST. not getting any expendsion of SST. What powder is best, I"m thinking I should be pushing alittle faster. THANKS[?][:)]

I load a 130 gr nosler balistic tip with 58 gr imr 4831. I dont have any specs on it but it seems to do good. I have killed mule deer and elk with it. My dad worked this load years ago with a 130 gr sp. and I just stuck with it.

Both of ya'll, go buy a manual. Read same. I tend to use whatever powder the accuracy load uses. Then load 5 with the starting load and load 5 rounds, carefully recording what 5 is loaded with what and work up by half a grain to the max. When you find the load your rifle likes stop. You can just load that or go down one load and work up from it, by 1/10th's to find the absolute best load, but that's kind of anal. 0 -
Here are 4 test loads that have worked fairly well for me.
1:150gr Speer BT, Norma Brass, 52gr IMR 4350, 2730 fps
2:130gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, Winchester Brass, 57 gr IMR 4831, 3070 fps in 22 inch barrel and 3175 fps in 24 inch. (super Hot load)
3:130gr Nosler Ballistic tip, Winchester Brass, 58 gr RL-22, 3100 fps (suoer hot load also)
4:140gr Sierra Boat Tail Spitzer, Winchester Brass, 55 gr IMR 4831, 2950 fps.
All of these loads were primed with CCI 200 Large Primers.
Hope this gives you a starting point. ALl of these loads should shoot 1" or less.0 -
I realize how much fun it is to reload and I do it every chance i get. BUT, I have two 270's one in a rem.700bdl and one in a Tikka.
Both guns shoot the Winchester Supreme 130gr Ballistic Silvertip better than any reload i could come up with. I don't know what it is, I don't shoot them in anything else. But my 270's, that's all they get.0 -
I shoot a 150 grain serria grand slam round nose with 64 grains of reloader 22 cci large rifle prime,best load I've gotten for deer hunting

Sunray I have 3 or 4 manuals, That is not the problem, with 130gr hornady sp I get good expandsion and good accruracy. I bough 1000 rounds of the 130 hornady SST and shot a deer last fall and left ahole the size of the bullet in and out, both lungs and heart where hit, had to track deer about 150 yards, never had to do this with soft points, I would like to know how I can get expandsion on the SST. Dose one need more speed for balistic tap then soft point[?]

Sunray- I have manuals and do read them. If you had read my post you would see where it says this load was worked up. Isnt that what you said? Using what ever powder the(accuracy load uses as you say) dont mean anything. Not every gun is going to shoot the same using the same powder. Do you have a nosler book, if you do you should take a look at the load for the 130 gr. If not go buy one and read it. I have been reloading for my 270 for 20 years and I know what load shoots best in it whether it is in the book or not.

I was loading 130 gr. Ballistics with H-450(I dont remember powder charge weight)but it was 3100fps.I had to trail many deer that were hit solid in the vitals.I quit hunting with a 270.A couple of years ago I worked up a load using 130 Sierra and H-4831sc powder traveling at 2800fps and have not had a deer go but a few feet and most dropping in their tracks.I Think maybe I had the Ballistics loaded too hot. 0 -

4831, either H or IMR, was 'made' for the 270. I have owned 5 or 6 and every one I WORKED UP loades for all of them and inverably H4831 was the best for both accuracy and velocity with 130, 140, and 150 gr bullets. If your gun will shot them I highly recommend the Barnes-X bullets in the 270. Many animals have been taken with a QUICK KILL using this combination.[^] 0
