What group size could be expected from a new gun, and what make and model give the best accuracy? Autos in 1911 style. Thanks.

It has more to do with the "shooter" than the gun. You can have the best gun and ammo in the world, and if you're not a shooter, you're not gonna hit the broadside of a barn. I have a smith 4506 that shoots like a dream, and the colt 45 is a great choice also. Para ordinance has done a great job in the 1911 45 acp's also. Get yourself a good gun and some good ammo, but practice and proper form will do more for you than anything. If you're already an accomplished shooter, please disregard this advice, as the next step for an accomplished shooter would definitely be what you're asking, better loads and an awesome firing iron........

A piece of crap might print 8" groups at 25 yards with the pistol locked down.
A high quality $1000+ .45 will usually get you guarenteed 1" groups at 25 yards while locked down. Wilson Combat has guarentee's like this.
It is possible to spend less and get 1" @ 25 yards, but its pretty variable.0 -

Depends more on how the guy in the factory felt the day it was made. I'm speaking of a BNIB basic government model that has nothing done to it. With decent ammo 2" and up. Fix the trigger, sights, grips, bushing, barrel(not always though) and good ammo, 2" and less. 0 -

Piece of CRAP? MORE than good enough for self-defense. Considering the avg range is UNDER 21 feet. Now look at what is said next and do the math.

If that piece of crap gun cost $250, that means to get down 7 inches you will spend another $750. That's just over $100 an inch.
Worth it? Not in my book. ANY shooter can take that piece of crap with the most BASIC effort and cut it in half. A simple barrel bushing, link & pin and maybe a cheap trigger job. AND you can change ammunition bullet weight or brand and maybe cut it down several inches for FREE. Seems SILLY someone thinks you need a TARGET gun for self-defense. The two are not related. I assure you a Wilson will go over that $1,000. I'd worry more about hitting a target at under 21 feet than 25 yards. If you have a 25 yard living room you can afford a full-time guard. Such shots outside are all but unheard of and you will NOT shoot those one inch groups if you think you are about to die in low light or darkness. You left all of those out. I'd rather survive with a crap looking gun than die with a trendy gun in my hand. Today in training (as always) we once AGAIN had the entire process slowed up by two guns (semi autos) malfunctioning. A typical day. Regardless of BRAND or COST they all fail. Today one was an " Infinity". If you know what that is. Wouldn't feed and new out of the box. We had a Taurus and a Ruger fail as well out of 10 students. My $200 1911 made from parts from various sources new and used functioned just fine as it has for years. If there is a difference in the "pieces of crap" guns functioning and even the performance over the $700+ types guns we don't see it. .....end of rant....0 -
Hold up there Darrell, calm down. The post was simple enough. No body said any thing about self defence or cost. Just what could be expected. And in the respondants opinion what gun was most accurate. Now I see you and the other fellow have worked very hard to get them little stars by your names 4 or 5 posts a day,and I do appriciate the advice, but its their opinion and they are intitled to it rather you think its silly or not. By the way you typed 300 words and did not even answer the questions in the post you just wanted to argue with the other guy.Have a nice day.

queeksdraw, I wonder if I am "one of those guys working hard to get the little stars by my name with 4 or 5 posts a day" in your opinion, since I'm the only other poster on this thread with almost 4 posts per day. To be honest with you, I am a little disturbed by that remark, as I really feel that my advice was pretty darn accurate based on both fact and experience. Now, I might have a little too much time on my hands, this is true, but I'm answering boards questions with what I feel to be extremely factual answers base on the same facts and experience. I, like a lot of fella's on here, am a very avid gun collector, shooter, reloader, and hunter. Guns, shooting, hunting etc. is my one and only hobbie now and has been for several years. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not in any way trying to be nasty, but I want you to be sure to know that my intentions on this board are "all good", and if at any point they are not welcome, please let me know, as I would be happy to just ask questions and read if that would be the preference.

I answered it very well. NO one gun gives the "best" accuracy. If someone finds one let me know. I had a Gold Cup that shot almost a single ragged hole at 25 yards with Federal math ammo. Switch to Remington match and you were looking at 2-3 inch groups. It's not about the gun. 0 -
I have a Kimber ProCDP in .45 ACP. It and I can shoot 1.5 inch groups from a rest, at 25 yds. I've had it for two years, and it's fired probably 15 different types of ammunition, and I've NEVER had any sort of malfunction......(the Kimber has never had any malfunctions, I've had several) even on days when it's been fired for over 500 rounds before cleaning to see how it will perform. It's not the cheapest, but I'm very pleased with it.
In my opinion, "it" does start with the gun. The worlds best shooter can't make an inaccurate handgun accurate just by holding it. Before the argument starts, I said "IN MY OPINION".

It is about the gun,and the ammo,the weather,many variables.From a colt goverment you can expect to shoot a bench rest group size of 3 to 4 inches at 25 yards.Some will do better some worse,this is just the average from what ive seen.Kimbers will generaly shoot 1 to 2 inch groups with ammo they like,from a bench rest with a good shooter or a ransom rest.Wilson combat will do about the same,more or less.Springfield Armory shoot right in there with the rest of the government models.If you shoot Bullseye or Bowling Pin matches you have to have a accurate gun to be a competiter.If your looking for a 1911 you should buy the best you can aford,Even if you customize a cheap gun you still have a cheap gun!The Kimber Gold Match is a fine gun and they are reasonable priced,They will generaly shoot in the one inch group size out of the box with the right ammo.cost is about 900.+ or -.The Colt Gunsite 45 is another excellent 45 shoots about the same as a Kimber cost about 1450. But has a high resale value.A gun with a 8 inch group size needs to be accurized real bad,If i could not fix it i would scrap it!!![B)].WHY SHOOT JUNK???????[?] Randy W. 0
