How to Camo a Black Syn Gun?
What is the best way to camo a black synthetic Mossberg 835 for turkey hunting? I don't want to spend a mint. Is the Snake Skin that Cabela's offers any good?

I did a knight wolverine in camo by hand using a very small brush. I cut leaf shapes out of thick paper. I have to work 12 hour night shift this weekend. I will take a picture of it and will post on the discussion board Monday if you want to see how it turned out. When it was dry,I sprayed stock with clearcoat to keep it looking good.

i bought the "hunters specialty" kit. it had 4 paint colors and a fake fern for pattern. you just hold the fake (or real as i used) leaves to the gun and sart spraying, dark colors first. my 22 looks great. i will also try to post pics on 4 whellers thread.

If you don't want to permanently alter your gun, try using burlap. Different camo shades of this stuff can be found at Army&Navy stores or old feed sacks can often be bought at hardware or feed stores for $.50-.75 each. One bag will be plenty.
If you go the feed bag route, get some Rit dye at Wally World and mix a few colors in bowls. Just let the burlap soak in it for a bit and hang them to dry. Wrap the gun with strips, using rubber bands to secure it so the rear of your slide action and ejection port stay clear. Cut bow tie shapes about 6in. long and loosely tie these through the strips wrapped around the gun, shredding them a bit for good effect.
Using burlap is handy because you can custom tune your colors. By carrying a small bag of extra bowties in different shades you can quickly modify your camo to fit the specific hunting terrain. This is why you tie them loosely to begin with.0 -
Yer best bet is good ol' Testors Model Paint in sooo many colors!
Use a brush, Q-tip, your finger, an old sock, whatever's in reach and daub on the flat green, flat black, flat tan, or the colors that whatever terrain you'll be in matches; and splatter away! It comes right off with MPro-7 spray, so you can touch up an area or redo the whole shebang any time you want! You can even add a thin coat of flat clearcoat to keep it from shining.

Go to www.hunterspec.com and look at their gun sock. They also have no residue tape. I hope wally world has it.

I use Kane Gun Chaps, they zip on and off and really protect. Plus you don't alter your gun. I have one for every gun that they make one for (that I have). I'd go with Txs'idea. Burlap is really cheap to buy. You'd only need a yard. You can just cut some strips, wrap them around the barrel and buttstock, hold it on with rubber bands. One strip on the forestock could be taped or glued on. The idea is to break up the shape so you don't need a whole bunch. You should be able to get coloured burlap too. Mind you, black is ok by itself if it's not shiny. That can be fixed with a can of Testor's dull coat. You have one of the parkerized models? 0 -
Burlap is NOT...NOT a real good idea.... The chemicals in plain burlap..and the dyes in camo burlap will eat up the blueing on a gun...Of course it has to get wet or be in a high humidity area...If your hunting rifle never gets wet it won't matter.. 0 -
I've got some nice looking camo duck tape ... but I'm wondering if that would be a bit smelly to the deer's sensitive nose?[?]

Why paint a black gun anyways ??
As long as the gun isn't shining and the fact that you can stand still - that would be the best "weapons" against animals.
I have never seen anyone hit better or get more waterfowls or anything - with a camo gun.
I think it's all psykological.
But then again, I could hit most things with my double barrel Jaguar O/U, the Simpson Suhl S/s, the Winchester 1500XTR semi 12 gauge and the 835 Ultimag Mossberg I once owned and now I only have the Benelli Super Blask Eagle - all were standard wodden stocks and blued barrels.
Just stand still, sit still.
But that's my way of doing things. =o)

JIM STARK-I've never had a problem with this. Maybe because I run it through the wash a time or two to help shred it and fade the dye. The more ragged it looks the better it works. 0
