scope for mini 14
I know the mini is not the most accurate rifle but looking to put a scope on it to help my bad eyes see 100yds out. I am considering a Simmons White Tail Classic 4.5X14X40. Any thoughts on this choice or power? Any other good choice in similar price range around $150? Thanks, GD

My wife bought me a mini 14 ranch rifle for Christmas. I want to put a scope on it and would like it to match the finish on the rifle. The rifle is ss with a walnut stock. I would like to install a good quality scope. Not the top of the line and not a cheap POS. Your feedback in this matter is appreciated.

On the ranch model do you need special scope mounts? I thought that the ranch is set up to use a cheaper mount than b-square. I have an old mini 14 gb model that has to use the b-square. I have a 3x12x40 tasco on mine for many years that does a great job. You can get a tasco, simmons, bsa, and some others that will not cost and arm or leg and in either nickle or matte finish. Be honest I would check Wal-Marts or a local gun shop close by. Do you have a Dick's Sporting Goods store close because they are reasonable on scopes. 0 -
The ranch model comes with 1" rings. I have a Tasco Silver Antler 3-9x40mm on my SS ranch that matches fairly well. Mine came with medium hieght rings and the scope barely hit the little knobby thing on the handguard where the rivet is. I bought an aftermarket handguard that didn't have that but you could easily shave it off of the original. I've heard complaints from others, but I have no problems with my Tasco. 0 -
My RANCH RIFLE came with rings. I had a bushnell 3x9 on it, but after a while decided it was just too big. While at Cabella's one day, found a Cabella's 2x7 22mm scope in the bargin cave, and bought it for $25. It looks just right on the Mini, and is as accurate as the rifle is. I've put about 100 rounds thru it since mounting the scope with no loss of POI. But I've mostly carried it in truck and 4wheeler over many miles, and everything is still tight and centered.

I DID NOT HAVE MUCH LUCK WITH REGULAR SCOPES (I TRIED SIMMONS AND TASCO)MOSTLY BECAUSE M14S ARE NOT ACCURATE. SO I PUT A ADCO RED DOT ON IT AND IT IS GREAT. FAST AND EASY TO PICK UP THE TARGET. PERFECT FOR QUICK SHOTS IN THE FIELD.

The only scopes that will closely match will be expensive. The silver scopes I have and have seen will look more "white" than your stainless rifle. The Burris Titanium and Nikon titanium will match very closely due to being a more "grey" finish.
Take it to the shop and mount a black scope on it, the contrast is pleasing. Also, set some of the variuos manufacturer's silver finish scopes on it, and determine if you like the look before you buy it.

PRZNCOP110, I don't know why so many of you complain about the accuracy of the Mini 14s.[?] Like I said in my earlier post, I have had the same 3x12x40 tasco on my 184 series mini since the mini was new and it has always been a tack driver. The only time I had problem was when the b-square mount worked loose due to the jarring of my Honda Rancher 4x4. For all those that can't hit with a mini 14, I and some of my friends will buy them cheap.[:D] 0 -
JJ, I wasn't complaining about the accuracy, the mini is great and a lot of fun to shoot. Mine is best served popping turtles over a pond or quick shooting in the field. It is so much easier to pick up targets with a red dot when you're in a hurry. If someone plans to use the mini off a rest, then a traditional scope is the way to go. I guess it depends on what you shoot and how you do it. By the way, I picked my mini up (cheap)from a guy who didn't think it shot well!! I just prefer red dots on my semi-autos and save the target scopes for the hunting and varmint rifles.

JustC is right, look around and try some on for size. I thought I had to have a stainless scope to match my varmint rifle. I finally settled on a black scope. Later I saw a rifle just like mine with a stainless scope and it did not look good. The contrast between the stainless and black is actually pretty neat looking.0 -
PRZNCOP110, sorry if I seemed to sound like I was singleing you out but for some reason I have seen a lot of other posts that are complaining about the accuracy of the mini 14. I have not used red dots very much so I really can't say much about them. I might try one on a 45 that I have to see if I would like them though. I love my little mini and so does my daughter. She shoots it more than I do. You stated that you shot turtles off ponds. Are they soft shells or snappers? Nothing tastes better than a snapping turtle fried real slow in an electric skillet. They are real fine in a cast iron skillet too but you have to know how slow to cook them in cast iron. My grandmother was the best! Again I am sorry that it seemed that I singled you out.[:)] 0 -
JJ,I wasn't offended at all, and you're right, there are alot of people that complain about the accuracy of minis. If you get a chance, try the red dot, I didn't think I would like one until I tried it. I am going to put one on my shot gun later. Think of a red dot as a high tech peep sight. They are great for up close, quick shots. I have to admit that I mostly shoot snappers because they are nothing but bait theives to a fisherman!! I have eaten soft shell made into soup, but I wasn't crazy about it.
