Soft point vs Hollow point

has anyone ever done a comparison test on the penetration and expansion of the 125gr jacketed soft point 9mm bullet versus the jacketed hollow point 125gr 9mm bullet. does the soft point give reliable expansion? for self defense ammo which is better out of the 9mm? any thoughts? thanks

  All other things being equal, which bullet is better as far as expansion,penetration,and accuracy.Right now i use ballistic tip and have found them to have better ballistics and explosive expansion but they are priced high.How do these two rate?

  These are just my opinions... And they are all for copper-clad bullets.
  Personally, for smaller (under .30 or so) caliber, they really don't seem to make a difference. The hole is so small on the hollow point rifle bullet that it doesn't seem to make a difference from soft-point. Now for larger or pistol-caliber bullet it doesn't seem to make much of a difference in trajectories, although undoubtedly it would at longer ranges. I do seem to get a slightly larger wound channel with hollow points.
  That said, I get adequate performance with either and don't buy one over the other on that fact alone. I actually don't use ballistic tipped bullets (for game hunting) as I've found them to cause too much damaged meat, especially if the shot was slightly off. They do fly sweet though, I do use them on varmits.

  I trust the trajectory and wind deflection of the balistic tip due to it's higher BC. That said, they do damage some more meat than other ammo. If you go to a scirrocco bullet by swift, in a factory ammo, you will have the ability of the polycarbonate tip for accuracy, but a bonded core which will cause less explosion and more penetration. If your shots are relatively short, use a remington core-lokt soft point for a good performance bullet at a great price.
  
  the only hollow points I have used are Sierra Match King's, which are more of a competition bullet than a hunting bullet, so I can't say anything pos/neg about any brand of HP.

  I have laid many antelope and deer down with 75 gr. Hornady HP's. Have used the 25-06 and Roberts Imp. I prefer the Roberts. Tissue damage is minimal, 100 to 150 yards. My buck antelope, this year had no bones broken and no edible organs damaged. Lungs were mushed. Bullet entered rear of rib cage, crossed the cavity, and lodged between two ribs on other side, next to skin. I love those HP's. Never had to chase or hunt a cripple. That is my cent and a half's worth. GW.

  No idea what you're using them in; but I've never seen an animal walk away from a Nosler Partition if you do your part.

  Like gunnut, I use partitions when I can. That said I shoot Hornady Light magnums in several calibers with boat tailed soft points. Never a problem. I have tried some of the ballistic tips and other high end bullets (factory ammo only) and in every case have found that accuracy sufffers. My rifles just don't like them and I shoot the bullets that give me greatest accuracy.
