sks hevy recoil and not cycling properly

i have one of thoes yugo sks's it kicks like a mule have m44 and a 30/06 theis dont seam to hit like this sks also some times it dosent cycle at all others the case is wedged inbetween the bolt and the reciver and other times it cycles but still hits hard "has a rubber but pad" if that means any thing. i am using wolf shells[?][:p]

  It could be the recoil spring is worn out. If the spring has been weakened over time from ALOT of shooting then it may need replacing. Did you get the gun used or unissued?

  Have you checked the gas system on your rifle? I'm not an SKS expert by any stretch but that and the main spring would be the first two places I would look. I am toying with the thought that the gas system might be clogged and not allowing the bolt to open properly. But, as I stated, I am no expert.

  I would check the rifle for a partially clogged gas port in
  the barrel. It can be cleared with a piece of stiff wire and compressed air. Check the gas piston and tube, a small dent in the tube can bind the piston causing cycling failures. As for the hard recoil, You may have a dead recoil spring. If after these checks the gun fires abnormally and you are not a gun smith, I would have this rifle checked by a gun smith. It sounds as if it has problems that could cause a catestrophic failure. These rifles have mild recoil under normal circumstances, any drastic change from established norms is a sign of a potentially dangerous situation.
  Heavy recoil could sheer the reciever cover pin, causing the release of the cover, bolt and carrier under recoil. This, as you might guess, can have EXTREMELY unpleasent results.

  Before firing did you disassemble the rifle and amd remove all the cosmoline from the bolt (firing pin & extractor), along with the gas tube
  and clean the gas port as suggested by the others?
  Is the recoil spring installed correctly? It can be installed backwards,the C-Clip end goes forward
  If not you will continue to you have problems until this is done.

  IT IS A USED ONE AND I TOTALY CLEANED ALL OF THE COS. OUT AND OFF IT PRIOR TO SHOOTING.THE RECOILSPRING MAY BE IN BACKWORDS ILL CHECK. AS FOR THE GASPORT I DONT THINK ITS CLOGGED HOW EVER THE PISTON DOES BIND A LITTLE BIT IF TURNED JUST RIGHT.[:p]

  Hi cjkusnierz,
  What is a condition of the bore and the cartridge chamber?
  Common problem with Yugo SKS is a corrosion of a bore and chamber.
  If the chamber is pitted and rough, gun may not function properly and corroded bore will influence the pressure.
  Heavy recoil you say. It's hard to beleive that you compare the recoil with a 30-06 rifle.
  Have you tried other ammo?

  i have only fired the wolf and therecoil spring was in the right way i just looked at the bore and the shell chamber and they look good. ok i think it is the gas blow back the piston binds alot in the rearward posision and where the gasport looks like it can be turned off for granade launching the little valve seams not to line up compleatly with the port. as far as the port goes can i just oppen the hole up in the valve or does it have to be a certin size[?]as far as the piston goes a drill and some valve grinding compound should do the trick[:p]

  Check again that piston - it should not bind by any degree.
  It is a tempered piece of steel, partly hard chromed so it should not bind - if it does, you definetely need a replacement.
  Check the alingment of the gas valve, piston gas chamber and the transfer bar (bellow rear sight).
  I would not recommend opening up the hole on the valve.
  SKS recoil is usually soft and mild.
  Try to find a competent gunsmith who would perform test firing and see what is wrong.

  Don't know too much about them except that the control for the gas port is your problem.I don't know where is is supposed to be set ? (open I think)Hang in there I'm sure someone will come up with the answer.
