Remington model 1100 12 GA
I own a remington model 1100 12 GA and I believe that it is one of the best shotguns ever made. It cycles so clean and fast and has never jammed on me and it is over 30 years old. The stocks are all REAL wood not fake laminate. It has original barrel with original vent rib and a one bead sight. It has brought down many quail, pheasant, duck, and other game birds also it is a great clay shooting gun. With that said I would like to ask anyones opinions of the remington model 1100.

tyman2203, I have both an 1100 in 12 gauge, and recently bought the similar 1187 premier in 20 gauge. My 1100 is much like yours, 30 years old and never a malfunction to my knowledge. This gun was left to me by my grandfather when he passed away. I used this gun frequently as a kid and into my latter teens, but now since my grandfather has passed on, I have rendered the guns he left me "retired", and have replaced them with new guns that don't have any sentimental value. I have recently had a couple of gun dealers speak very negatively toward remingtons "gas operation" semi autos explaining that they are very unreliable. It's ironic that both of these gun dealers did not stock remington in their shops. I, for one, believe that if remington was having as much problem with the guns and these guys say, they would have made some changes by now in the operation systems of their guns. I just took my 1187 20 ga. out chukar hunting about 2 weeks ago and it performed flawlessly for me, a great looking gun too in my opinion. The only thing bad about my 1100 or my 1187 is the shooter, ME..............

I have an 1100 .410 and I just love it. A lot of other companies have very similar gas systems in their guns. I do personally believe that recoil operated guns are more reliable than a gas operated system, but for the most part, if they are kept cleaned and oiled then they too will perform flawlessly.
I had originally bought an 1100 12 gauge but later sold it when I found an Ithaca/SKB XL900 because it was over a pound lighter and had nearly identical gas system. That pound in weight pays off at the end of a long quail hunt.
I have been using a Benelli Super Black Eagle for over 10 years now. I bought it when I had quite a few other 12 gauges but now it is my only one. It can shoot everything and except for el-cheapo light loads it cycles flawlessly too. I am going to get a slug barrel for it also. This gun will honestly be my very last gun I'd get rid of if the situation ever came to it (I recently had to thin my collection WAY back due to medical problems and the subsequent bills).
I sure am not slamming the Remington 1100 at all, but I find the Benelli a better choice for a 12 gauge (for me). I still greatly enjoy shooting my 1100 .410. I'm still looking for a full-choked VR barrel for it if anyone runs across one. [;)]

Sorry, but here's one who has had a negative experience with the 1100. I bought a new 20 ga. 1100 mag for duck hunting when they first came out( and lead was legal). My hunting buddies, not to be outdone, bought mag 12's. My gun would not consistently cycle during cold weather, regardless of whether it was dry, lightly oiled, or soaked with oil. I kept the gun absolutely clean, including the gas ports, and out of frustration sent it back to Remington not once, but twice. Ammo was irrelevant, it simply wouldn't fire more than twice, at best. Finally, and I can still vividly picture this, I had six greenheads, wings set, pitch into my decoys, and the d*** gun turned itself into a single shot--again. That decided it's fate---- it now is a bit of debris in front of my blind, and has been there for 18 years ! 0 -

After one season, both 12's went back to Remington to have the retaining pin for the trigger assembly replaced, as they were nearly sheared from recoil. In short, I've been shooting Beretta's since--- with NO problems.0 -
I've had a model 1100 12 guage D/U banquet gun that I have used for over twenty years and never had it malfunction once.[:D]

My 1100 skeet gun is getting close to fourty years old & unknown thousands of rounds. I have only had to replace the rubber "O" rings
on occasion & once the metal cup that is near the "O" ring.
I have used large numbers of reloads & cannot recall a single failure to fire. Failures to cycle have been extremely rare except for those caused by the need to replace the above items.0 -
I have one that was turned into a tactical gun before I bought it( 18.5 inch barrel, choate pistol grip stock and forearm seven shot extender and a six round side saddle. It lies by my beside and in the 7 years I have owened it I have never had a problem. It is my favorite gun to shoot also and I have put probably a thousand rounds throught it. A great shootgun, all and for those green heads or in my case turkeys I use a Browning bps 10 gauge in shadowgrass.

I have a question for laxcoach ...Is your 1100 20ga a Magumun model? It sounds like I have the same shotgun as you(a present to myself for going into the Army back in 73) BUT if I wasn't shoot'n Magumun rounds it would hang up and play the single shot thing! I finally when out and bought a regular 2 3/4" barrel and it works fine with the lighter loads. And when I go goose hunting with 3" Mag. shells, I'd drag out the Mag. barrel! All worked well ...until the F*ing "steel" shot came in!!! Grrr... My 2 cents! ...Mark

11echo, yes, it WAS a 20 mag. I never attempted to shoot 2-3/4" shells in it, because Remington said they wouldn't cycle. As it turned out, the d*** thing wouldn't cycle ANYTHING ! I hope it enjoys its watery grave. 0 -

The Rem. 1100 is a quality shotgun. They are a favorite of trap shooters because no other autoloading shotgun shoots softer than the 1100. Kept clean they are vaery reliable. I have a 12 ga., 20 ga., 28 ga. and a .410., so you can see I am a 1100 fan. 0 -
Hi Labwild, My experience with a 1100 trap 12 ga. was not good it kicked me so bad that I could not shoot over 2 rounds of trap, Owned it for 1 Mo. Was very happy to get rid of it, I still shoot trap every week with a Browning over and under and a Winchester super X auto. no recoil problems. When it comes to rifles I think Remington's are the best. 0
