M1 Garand
I just got a correct grade M1 from CMP. I don't know a whole lot about them, I field stripped it and cleaned it by using the instructions included. Everything looks great. I was wondering though, the instruction say I should have it looked over by an experienced gunsmith before firing. Is this just a c.y.a. statement, aren't these rifles headspaced and test fired? hey guys, help me out here, i have two local gunshops in town that are both selling springfield m1,s in 308, they both claim to only have one each, and both are unfired. one has a 1499.00 price tag, and the other has 1599.00 on it. since i am looking to buy one, i was wondering about the price. they say all parts are springfield except for the top over barrel, it seems to be a tan color plastic. any ideas on this being a good purchase for a shooter and future collectable? 0 -

I'd recommend following rsnyder's advice. The website for CMP is www.odcmp.com.
Yes, you can use an M1 for deer hunting, and, yes, you can use an M1 for competition target shooting, but it's really not the best choice for either one. The best reason for getting one is if you want a genuine USGI rifle that was used by our troops in WWII and Korea, and because you want to own a real piece of US history. The only place to get a REAL USGI M1 is CMP, or a second-hand one that originally came from them. Springfield Inc uses foreign-made receivers, USGI parts, and a commercial stock; pretty, but not historic. (And, I don't believe that make a claim of accuracy.)
If you really want a "pretty" rifle that will never be collectible, you might want to talk to Dean's Gun Restorations; at least with him, you select the degree of accuracy of your rifle.
Service grade M1 rifles can generally shoot 2 MOA, sometimes a little better. (I have an International Harvester with a LMR barrel that will easily shoot 1 MOA.) This is usually good enough for informal target shooting and deer hunting.
In case you weren't aware of it, Springfield Inc (formerly Springfield Armory, Inc) is a private company, not related to the US government. The US military used M1's made by Springfield Armory (the government installation), Winchester, International Harvester, and Harrington & Richardson.

Dean starts with a Rack grade rifle and makes it pretty, yes, but eventuaslly they'll all be collectable. It's just that some nefarious type may say Dean's work is original.
Now, cwinn, go to the CMP, the evil place that it is(I'm in Canada and they can't or won't sell to me), shoot the matches because they are great fun and go buy a rifle. Try to buy just one. They're like potato chips. One isn't enough0 -
CWINN: My advise, (and advise is only worth what you pay for it) is
to try out one of CMP's Springfield M-1 rifles, a "Dainish" with a
VAR barrel. At $425.00. Rifle may have a couple of forign small
parts like gas cyl. and bands and a VAR barrel but rifle is strictly
a G.I. M-1. If you dont like it you should not lose any money on it.
Glass bedding can be self done. Trigger group can be sent away and
smoothed and lightened. Dont expect sub-minute of angle groups.
Proper handloaded ammo to fit this rifle makes a world of difference.0 -
After over 20 years of involvement with the Garand I am going to tell you that you have to make some choices here: Do you want a nice looking rifle that you can take out shooting? Do you want something collectable that you can go plinking with? Or do you want a real match rifle for competition? If you want a match rifle for serious shooting then by all means purchase one from any number of specialists who make these rifles- you won't be sorry with the results. If you just want a nice to looking M1 go with the commercial rifles from MILTEC or Springfield. These will look like new and shoot very nicely. If you want a rifle that will be a collectable someday and always have value because it is an original surplus Garand (with the paperwork to prove it) then purchase a service grade rifle from the CMP. Avoid the rack grade since they tend to have barrels with more wear- although from the collectors standpoint that means a better chance of an original barrel. The Danish rifles which Joe mentions have a reputation for better accuracy than the standard GI Garands if you specify the VAR barrel.
If you tell us exactly what it is that you wish to do with this rifle we could give you a better answer. Sunray, why should the CMP sell a surplus M1 Garand (or any surplus military firearm) to someone in a foreign country? I doubt that the tax payers here in the USA would appreciate sales like that very much!

Thanks for all your input guys. What im looking for is a rifle i can take out and shoot and that will shoot well, and if its collectible that would be a bonus. The collectible aspect isnt that important.
Also, i looked at CMP's website and it seems that you have to meet some criteria or standards to purchase a rifle from them. Is that true? Thanks again!0 -
Yep, there are purchasing requirements.(one of which is US citizenship, the buggers) That was my reference to shooting the matches. You can join the Garand Collector's Assoc. too. But really, shoot the matches. From what I understand, most affiliated clubs have loaner rifles you can use. You will never meet better people than you will shooting. Don't worry about your scores. That can come later. Go shooting and have fun.
Up here, our socialist, rat, offspring-of-unmarried-parents, politicians would rather destroy the rifles my tax money paid for than sell me one or six. They're chopping most if not all of our C1A1 FN's and thousands of perfectly good No. 4 Lee-Enfield Canadian made rifles. It's very sad.0
