Browning BAR Accuracy

I'm going to a auction on friday night. They Advertised 2 BAR rifles. 1 in .270 and the other in 30/06. What can I expect as far as accuracy if I happened to get one? I'm more interested in the .270.

    My opinion of the Bar is that it's the absolute best semi auto on the market under $1,000. I don't want to p/o any of the remington guys, but in my opinion, the bar is heads and shoulders above it's most viable opponent, the remington 7400. In my experience, I've found the bar to shoot nearly as good or as good with factory ammo "out of the box" as an "out of the box" bolt action rifle. It really depends on your preference as to which caliber to choose. The .270 is really just a necked down .30-06 anyway. I like both calibers an awful lot and don't think you'd see a real big difference in the two for either shooting or hunting purposes, it's just a matter of preference. The '06 is going to have a much larger option base of loads if you're reloading for it, but if you're shooting factory ammo, again you'll find your options to be virtually the same with either caliber. The normal hunting load for the .270 you will find to range from about 130-150 grain bullets, and for the 30-06, you will find the range a touch bigger going from 130-200 or so in grain weight of bullet. There are other factory loads available, those I mentioned are the most available and more frequently used. In summary, the Bar would definitely be my choice if I were in the market for another semi auto rifle, I already have two of them and also have a remington 742 woodmaster and a 7400 carbine. Not to call names, but the only 2 semi's I own that aren't retired are Bar's..............whichever you choose, do yourself a major big favor and use good bases, rings, and most importantly of all, spend a little more and put yourself some good optics above the launching pad. The biggest mistake guys make in my opinion when buying a nice firing iron is the cheap ol' scope they mount on it. If you can see it, you stand a much better chance of hitting it......

    Dyer, my buddy and I were hunting together this past season up in Virgina and as we always do, we met along a pasture fence-line after climbing down our trees to finish our walk to the truck together. Well low and behold, as my buddy and I approached each other, I said "Tim, stop.....There's a deer standing in the field"......Since I had killed a nice buck the morning before, I wanted Tim to have a shot, so I let him shoot. Just before he shot, I ranged the deer at 540 yards, a shot I probably would not have attempted anyway. I told Tim just before he squoze the trigger I thought he was crazy, but we are allowed to run dogs in Virginia, so had he missed, we would have had a nice race immediately following the miss. Well we didn't have to call for backup this day, he dropped the 8 point in his tracks, and you guessed it, he was shooting the browning Bar, in 25-06 though. I just thought I'd share that story with you, and I'll be honest with you, if I wouldn't have been the one doing the range finding and been there to witness it myself, I would have probably doubted the story.

    Ditto on woodyd's reply. He has it covered.
    They are beautiful, totally reliable, and the magazine system can't be beat!
    I haven't had a 270, but the '06 and 338 shoot groups as good as most bolts. Have trouble with the 7mm Rem Mag, it's a little faster and the barrel shimmies too much and I guess it needs a BOSS system. Accuracy suffers, so it's semi-retired till I fix it.
    If they had made the BPR in .35 Whelen I'd have had one of them.

    I don't know how I. shute feels about this one, but unless you're planning to reload and "tune your groups", I would probably opt against the boss system in the calibers you are choosing from. I have an a bolt eclipse hunter in 7mm mag with the boss and also a winchester model 70 .270 with the boss system, and the only advantage I see is due to the fact that I load my own hunting and shooting rounds and it allows me to "tune" the barrel to my reloads more specifically.

    You're right. I wouldn't even consider the BOSS unless the rifle just would not group. There's one on the .338 and it gets to be a PITA going through the brush with all that extra length. Shot about 40 rounds getting it set for factory 250 grainers, and my re-loads require re-setting for each load. You have to carry a chart and all the hardware if you change cartridges. I like rifles that shoot everything to the same spot.
    The .338 Safari II is a keeper, though.

    I have a couple of Browning BAR's, one .338 Win. mag, one .270 Weatherby Mag. The .338 is by far the most accurate rifle I own, and the .270 Weatherby is also pretty accurate but I am still working on different loads to try to get it a little better. These are great rifles and always function perfectly with any load I run through them. I can't imagine anyone being dissapointed with a BAR.

    ditto to what wood70 said about optics, i see about 2 doz. bar's a year in my shop and most of them have bushnell sport view scopes on them. kinda like buying a ferrari and them putting cheap gas in it.

I walk into gun shops all over the South and see Bar's that I'd ordinarilly be interested in on the shelf with a cheap ol' scope on it, and I won't even pick it up and look at it. I know the ol' boy isn't gonna sell me just the gun, he wants to sell the package. I am afraid of being arrested for littering because those cheap ol' scopes wouldn't even make it home with me.

    Thanks guy's for the input. I have a couple 30/06's in bolts. Just really wanting to try a another caliber. I do not reload so I'll use factory ammo. I hope not to many show up at the auction so I might get a steal.lol
