Rebarreling a rifle II
I am wanting to rebarrel a rifle. I am wanting a 240 Weatherby rifle. I have a Remington 30-06 and want to rebarrel it to 240 Weatherby. I have talked to a couple of gunsmiths and they have told me to skip the project and just buy a Weatherby. Is this a good idea and if not please tell my why.(?) I am also unsure of what an appropriate price would be. I realize that alot of it depends on what grade and contour of barrel I get. Thanks in advance for the input. 257

Again, the smiths are telling you this because you can most likely find a good used weatherby for less than the cost of the re-barrel job. It is actually more complicated than screwing one off and another on. You would likely have to pay for a reamer if the smith does not have one in that caliber, and the vise that holds the barrel almost always mars the bluing so it also has to be re-blued. 0 -

Not to mention that your 30-06 is NOT a magnum, reciever, nor does the bolt have a magnum boltface. Therefore, as well as the barrel job, you need to open up the bolt face, open up the feed rails for the magnum case, and more than likely would have a crapy shooter if the barrel is a sporter barrel to start with. The ebst way would be to use a magnum action and rebarrel with a high quality blank form Hart, Lilja, Pacnor, shilin, kreiger, schneider, douglas, etc.
After that much $$$, you could have purchased a NEW weatherby. So, If you must have it, sell the rifle you have, and use that money to build/buy the 240 wthby mag. You could take your 30-06 action and build a 6mm-06 wildcat or 6mm-06 ackley and have the same power, but with a standard .473" boltface and much cheaper brass.

JustC, the 240 Weatherby has a standard '06 case head, not .532, as do other Weatherby magnums. 0 -

You are right rordog, I stand corrected. The 240 wthby does carry the .473 boltface.
I will stick with the suggestion of 06 brass for a wildcat or just chamber a 6mm ackley if you lust after the .243dia projectile.
