Stainless 1911

Does anyone know exactly what year Colt first offered the 1911 in stainless steel? The earliest reference I can find says 1983.

  There were never any stainless Models 1911. Models 1911 were all military contract pistols that ceased production when the Model 1911A1 was introduced in 1925. All Models 1911 and 1911A1 are carbon steel. None were sold commercially. Many were sold as surplus.
  
  Oh, you say you did not mean what you said? What you realy meant was a stainless Colt Government Model? Why didn't you say so? (Sorry. I get so tired of seeing commercial Colt Government Model pistols misidentified as military Models 1911 that I tend to get a bit snotty about it sometimes. However, we really should be more accurate in our descriptions, shouldn't we?)
  
  I probably should not try to answer this from memory (my catalog files are at my office and I am writing from home), but I will try.
  
  My recollection is that the stainless Government Model was introduced in 1984. (I have a neat brochure showing a wet stainless Government Model in a dishwasher rack!) I have an early stainless Government Model and it is one of the most beautiful Colt autos I have ever seen. There is NO plastic on it anywhere, and the finish is outstanding. I will check my catalog file and confirm or correct the introduction date.
