I like my 45s in 1911 configuration also.I own a Springfield MilSpec and a couple of Colts.Springfield is less expinsive Colt has a smoother finish. The both function fine and would do the job.I use McCormick mags in both brands.CW

Whether you buy a springfield or a colt you are getting about the same quality in a nearly identical firearm. You could go with one or the other it don't matter much to me although Colt's name carries a premium and holds it's resale value a bit better than Springfield. Springfield is cheaper for pretty much the same quality though. So, it's basically up to you to decide if you want the resellability of a colt or the more cost effective springfield.
You may also consider other manufacturers like Para-Ordnance, Kimber, Les Baer ect... they do put out some very high quality firearms and some with options that you'll never see from Colt or Springfield unless you buy aftermarket parts and put them on yourself.
Things to avoid, Llama, AMT and other cheap knockoffs, you get what you pay for in a 1911.0 -
Unless you are sold on the 1911, don't forget the Ruger P-90's. Awesome pistols!
Taxation WITH representation isn't so hot either!0 -
Colt, Kimber, Springfield, Wilson, Baer......you can't go wrong with any of them.
If you're on a tight budget and looking for a "plain Jane" M1911, consider the refurbished Argentine Modelo 1927 at JLD Enterprises:

And don't forget the new Smith & Wesson 1911s.

I have owned the Colt GOld Cup, Colt Commander, & the Colt Goverment Model. And carried a Colt 1911a1 in Viet Nam, all in .45
Others that I have owned, Norinco 1911, Kimber
I now have a Springfield Trophy Match in stainless, best shooter & most accurate, bar none, that I have shot for a 45acp.

I'd go with the colt if it were me, but I own a Colt and am very familiar with it. Both guns are awesome guns and you can't go wrong with either.

i wouldn't get a ruger p90! i had one new in 91. biggest piece of crap i ever owned!!! if you had a target at 25yrd's, you would be better off to throw the bullets!!!!![:(!] 0 -
I can shoot my Ruger P-90 much better than my 1911a1. I carried a 1911a1 all the time I was in the Air Force and in Korea and like the P-90 better than any of the 1911a1's I shot. Probably just me.
If you don't care where you are going, you can't get lost.0
