How to get a ding out of my stock

I have heard some mention on the board somewhere along the way of how to get a small ding out of the wood on your gun. It seems like someone said to use a wet rag and an iron. If this is a viable way to accomplish this, would someone please share some directions with me as I don't want to make it worse than it already is. Or if there is another method that works, I'm open. This is a beautiful citori so I don't want to mess up.

  If you don't want to mess up a nice gun, take it to someone whose done it and pay the money. Trial and error on a nice gun never seems to turn out. Maybe others have had better luck.

  A good hot iron and damp cloth works great on small dents and dings.
  take your time and keep the cloth damp. It won't take 100% of it out but it will take a great deal out.Depending on the wood it can take as much as 90-97% out
  
  Its really hard to soar with the Eagles, when you are stuck with turkeys!

  If the wood is simply dinged and not gouged (where the wood is actually removed rather than compressed) you can steam out the ding. I have used this method on countless M1 Garand stocks and the results have always been good to excellent: My perfered way is to use an electric soldering iron, cotton cloth patches and a small syringe with a #10 needle- the type used by diabetics. Soak the cloth and place it over the ding. Place the tip of the hot soldering iron on the cloth and let the steam penetrate the wood. Once the wood fibers soften a bit you can inject very small amounts of water into the ding itself and and this will generate even more steam and lifts the ding out faster. Don't get carried away- you don't want to soak the wood! If you are not pressed for time you can forget about the syringe and simply use the wet cloth. Try to lift the ding out slightly above the level of the wood so that you can sand and finish it to match the rest of the stock.

  I believe the Citori has a poly finish on the wood which would have
  to be removed first. If such is the case, I would live with the small
  ding. 101

  101 ABN gave you some good advice as well as the other people that responded. The choice that you have made is the best if you do not want to spend the money, besides it gives your weapon some character and a lesson for the future. but try as you may if you use the weapon get used to the dings.
