A recently acquired gun makes me need a little bit of info. I would appreciate your help, if possible. I am familiar with the .300 H&H Magnum, and know its history somewhat. My questions are concerning the "other" .300 Magnum cartridges. Can you tell me approximately when the .300 Winchester Magnum came out? I have the same question with the .300 Weatherby Magnum. When did it come out? Also, there seems to be a consensus that all three of these are very similar, all burning a lot of powder, making a very loud noise, and "slugging" the shooter pretty hard. What is your take on these three cartridges? Thanks in advance for your help.......owe you one on Colts, if you ever need it!

Winchecter introduced the 300 Magnum in 1963. It measures out a bit longer in case length and in loaded rounds than the 30-06. It is capable of driving a 180 gr. bullet faster than you can get from a '06 with a 150 gr. bullet. The Weatherby 300 has been around since about 1948. Both are belted magnums and in fact, you can fire form the Weatherby cases from 300 H&H cases. Check out the Speer or Sierra loading manuals for specific ballistics. All three are more than I want to shoot, being a die hard .308 fan.

Performance wise, the 300 H&H magnum, introduced in 1925, the 300 Winchester magnum, introduced in 1963 and the .308 Norma magnum, intorduced in 1958, are all just about the same. What one can do the others can be loaded to duplicate. The 300 Weatherby magnum, introduced in 1948, is a horse of a whole different color and is more powerful then the other three 300 magnums. All of these cartridges can be made from 300 H&H brass.
I have fired all four cartridges listed above and don't find them to punish the shooter unduly when fired in rifles weighing 7-3/4 to 8 pounds. All four cartridges are capable of takeing any game in North America and most game in Africa. However I do like a bullet of larger diameter and of at lest 300 grains weight when takeing on the big bears.0 -

NO You Can't!!! Resident Cartridge Kings are not allowed such luxury! You are just going to have to put up with the questions.......here's another one:
I've shot some pretty hot loads from 30-06's and this is probably the "meanest" gun I've shot. It wasn't all that bad, but it wasn't the most "fun" either! It was a "lightweight" model and did little to manage any recoil. Anyway, can you give me any insight into what to expect from a .300 H & H Mag? Just looking at those cartridges is sort of making me "weak in the knees!" Hahahahahaha!!!! Thanks!

RP, you're asking a cartridge guy to evaluate the feel of the weapon. Sorry, but this is like asking an engine specialist to evaluate the handling of the whole vehicle on the road - I can speculate but in the absence of actual experience (and mine with magnums is limited to three shots with a .458 African), I cannot give you any valid answer to a question of this nature. 0 -
