BERKSHIRE 12 ga. double

Seeking information on "The Berkshire." This is a 12 gauge double barrel shotgun, hammerless, with 30 inch steel barrels ---serial number 47483.
Only name on it is "THE BERKSHIRE" -- My late father acquired this shotgun in 1919 from his grandfather. NorthForkRancher

  Made by Crescent Arms Co. of Norwich, Connecticut for the Folsom Arms Company of New York. Folsom inturn sold them to the Shapleigh Hardware Company, of St. Louis, Missouri, who used "Berkshire" as a "Trade Name" or "Store Brand".
  In some texts it is said that Folsom actually owned Crescent?

  Folsom did buy Crescent, and later sold Crescent to Savage c.1930. Folsom also imported guns from Belgium, so check for proofmarks between the barrels and receiver.

  Crescent made many thousands of these "hardware shotguns" under literally hundreds of different brands and private labels.
  
  As Black Guns says, check for proof marks (frequently under the forearm)....if there's an E and an LG, it's a Belgian gun, and of unknown quality.
  
  If not, it's a Crescent...they were inexpensive, but of good quality.
