22 Magnum
WHY ISN'T THE 22 MAGNUM USED FOR SEMI AUTO HANDGUNS? IT'S BALLISTICS ARE BETTER THAN A 32, COMPARAREABLE TO THE "NEW" 32 MAG, BETTER THAN 380'S AND FAR BETTER THAN 22'S AND I NEDEDN'T EVEN COMMENT ON A 25.?
I DON'T GET IT. It would seem that the only problem would be over penetration which could easily be solved by bullet type. What am I missing?
Dave
PS In case you can't tell I think it's a far under rated round.

trying to find out who manufactors a 22 magnum in a semi automatic. can you help me? 0 -
THERE WERE AT LEAST TWO COMPAINES WHO MADE 22 MAG SEMI-AUTOS. GRENDEL AND AMT. I HAVE ONE OF EACH LISTED ON THIS SITE. THE PROBLEM WAS THE POWDER DID NOT BURN IN THE SHORT BARREL, DID NOT ALLOW THE BULLET TO REACH TOP SPEED AND ALSO A MEGA MUZZEL BLAST. I WITH YOU AND MANY OTHERS ENJOY THE 22 MAG ROUND.

Why can't a .22 lr cartidge be fired in a .22 magnum? I've always read that it's dangerous, but never seen the explanation why.

While a .22LR CAN be fired in many .22mag guns, it is both unreliable & possibly dangerous. It can also ruin the gun.
Not only is the .22LR case smaller than the .22mag case, but the head diameter is also smaller. So, you have a small case in a large chamber, which causes excessive swelling of the case when it is fired. This could cause the case to split, sending hot gases & bits of brass out of the side of a revolver. Damage to the gun can be caused by the small head size not cushioning the firing pin, & allowing it to peen the chamber rim.

Recently there was a discussion on this subject which prompted me to take both rifle and pistols chambered in both 22lr and 22 mag along with the chronograph to the range. The results were an eyeopener as the two rounds were very close in velocity from the pistol, but from the rifle the 22 mag was almost 2 1/2 times as fast as the lr. weird 0 -
CFPython to expand on nmeyers explanation, the 22lr is a heeled bullet meaning the base of the bullet is reduced in size to fit the 22 case of the same diameter as the bullet while the 22 mag bullet is the same diameter the full length and is inserted in a case larger than bullet diameter. A 22 mag will not fit in a standard 22lr chamber and as noted the 22lr will be a very "loose" fit in a 22 mag chamber. Also as I understand in some of the older guns there is a slight bore differenc between the 22lr and 22 mag.
Seawish as far as balistics are you comparing apples to apples? Most handgun loads list ballistics from short barrels while the 22 mag balistics listed are usually from a barrel 4 or more times longer. It has been my experience that the 22 mag out of a pistol length barrel has more bark than bite.0 -
Thanks for the info guys.
