Mossberg is a good one in that price range.

The Remington 870 is my favorite.

    I use a Remington 870.

Guns only have two enemies: Rust and Liberals....

I have a Mossberg 590 with the pistol grip. Having the shoulder stock removed makes it much more manuverable in confined spaces (like a hallway).

cbxjeffIt's too late for me, save yourself.

I have a Winchester pump action model 1300 defender. It has an 18" barrel and holds eight 12 gauge shells. It is moderate cost and gives one a lot of manueverability due to its short barrel. I recommend it for home defense.

A very strong consideration that you need to have is "will this weapon be used only by you or will other members have access to it" if other members will use this weapon than you also need to consider their experience, also what is your experience? The Mossberg with all wood and standard shotgun stock is one of the weapons that my wife has for self defense, she keeps it loaded with all brass 00 and 000 and she has eight rounds of "instant hell sender".

I'd go with the Mossberg 500, Remington 870 or Winchester 1300. I urge you to go with a full stock so you can shoulder the gun for accuracy. I had a pistol grip once, shot it and sold it. The recoil is incredible and it "killed" my hand. Accuracy you say? If your going to use it for home defense maybe your shot will be at a range that the pattern will only open 6" at most. Stay away from magnum loads as well. If someone other than yourself has to use it the recoil won't scare them sh**less. A 18" 870 Remington is my home defense loaded with 00 buck setup with a light. Remember that your prowler maybe a family member roaming around in the dark. You must equip with a light with a pressure on/off switch so a in the dark accident doesn't happen. Hope this helps.

Can't go wrong with any of the pumps that Vipereater mentioned. But I personally like the Remington 870. Another thought for any pump is getting an extended tube so you can hold more shells.

There is nothing wrong with the above mentioned shot guns, all great choices, i will suggest 1 thing though, on a defense weapon stick with full rifle stocks, better weapon retention.
