Suggested 308 sporting rifles

What are some desirable 308 semi auto sporting rifles? I'm thinking about buying another 308 sporting semi auto for my collection. I've got an assortment of battle rifles and have recently turned to collecting sporting 308's, the only sporting semi auto 308 I have so far is a Remington 7400 which I am satisfied with as long as I use handloads or commercial ammo (it didn't like the Spanish 308 surplus I tried with it).

I'm currently leaning towards a Browning BAR or one of the old HK sporting rifles with an action like a HK91 (excellent rifle).

  Since you already have a 740/7400, I too would lean towards the BAR next...

  I know all the experts will hammer me on this but I have had great whitetail success and alot of fun with the Winchester model 100. I have heard alot of negatives about firing pin breakage but I have used mine every season for 22years without so much as a misfire. It, to me, is a light, fast handling,fast to the shoulder, clean little rifle. Plus if taken care of it should appreciate in value over the years.

  If you are looking to collect I would recomend a Pre 1964 Winchester Model 70 in .308. My 2 cents [8D]

  None of the commercial .308 semis are collector grade rifles. Maybe Sage's Win. 100. Commercial rifles generally won't like ball ammo. It's the same thing but different. There are slight differences in chamber tolerances. Those H&K rifles that look like 91's are 91's with stupid stocks on them to get around your country's stupid laws. Look into collecting military bolt actions. Keep you out of trouble for another 20 years or so,

  Now that you have tried the semi-auto rifles why don't you take a look at a good SAKO pre-Garcia with a Befors bbl. they are a delight to shoot and you can use the peep sight or equip it with a good 3x9 scoop and find out just how good you are. There are some good ones out there in used condition for $700 range that are well worth the money. Enjoy your shooting.

  For a sporting .308 semi-auto the BAR can't be beat. I have shot some, even the Portugals, that will shoot MOA or better with quality factory ammo. Stay away from military surplus ammo. Most is made for light macine guns or select fire rifles such as the HK91, the FNFAL or Galil. This ammo is very hot and may exceed maximum pressure limits for the BAR or 7400. I know it's cheap but it's not worth damaging your rifle and it's usually not very accurate.
  Mate a nice Leopold to a BAR and you'll have no regrets.

  I would go with the BAR, I have a Belgian 30-06 and it has never let me down. It out shoots my dad's A-bolt in 7MM Rem Mag.
