Well, if you are tight on cash but want a reliable handgun and relatively inexpensive ammo have you considered a Taurus PT-92 9mm? You might even consider a CZ-75 or an IMI Baby Eagle 9mm compact or an FEG Hi-Power clone of the Browning Hi-Powers, the Taurus PT92 is basically identical to the Beretta in looks and feel and just as reliable and the FEG Hi-Power clone is pretty much a duplicate of the Brownings they function about the same. I haven't really heard anything bad about the CZ's although I have no personal experience with them. From what I've been told they are pretty reliable and as good as any basic 9mm on the market. You can even get .40s&w cal models as well.

For my money, you can't do much better than a Ruger GP-100 in .357 Magnum for durability, reliability, and out-of-the-box accuracy. My first handgun was---and still is---my trusty GP-100, and I'd never trade it in. I only wish Ruger would make a model just like the GP-100, only chambered in .44 Magnum!
