The Big Day/ First Handgun
Hey y'all. This is my first post to the forums. My 21st birthday is coming up Friday and like any redblooded American I am going to buy my first handgun (the state of CO doesn't require me to wait either, so I pay, get ammo, and I'm runnin' out to the range). I have narrowed down my choices to a couple based on price, availability of ammo, use (plinking cans mainly) and reliability, my guns tend to get used so I don't neccesarily need em to look pretty. I've got quite a bit of shooting experience but since I'm a poor ArmyROTC cadet and this is a significant investment I was wondering if ya'll could help me make up my mind. I've got about $400 to $500 tops to spend.
They are:
Ruger MK II Gov't or
Springfield XD .40 OD Green Frame
I was also thinking about a .38Spl but I don't have much experience with revolvers (limited to Ruger .357 .44 and .480) so I don't really know what direction to go in with that. I'm leaning towards the MKII right now because the ammo is so much cheaper and every Walmart in the country carries it. However I think that the .38Spl ammo is cheap as well and is a compromise between that and the more expensive .40 bullets. Any thoughts? Thanks.[;)]

Well, if you are tight on cash but want a reliable handgun and relatively inexpensive ammo have you considered a Taurus PT-92 9mm? You might even consider a CZ-75 or an IMI Baby Eagle 9mm compact or an FEG Hi-Power clone of the Browning Hi-Powers, the Taurus PT92 is basically identical to the Beretta in looks and feel and just as reliable and the FEG Hi-Power clone is pretty much a duplicate of the Brownings they function about the same. I haven't really heard anything bad about the CZ's although I have no personal experience with them. From what I've been told they are pretty reliable and as good as any basic 9mm on the market. You can even get .40s&w cal models as well. 0 -
For my money, you can't do much better than a Ruger GP-100 in .357 Magnum for durability, reliability, and out-of-the-box accuracy. My first handgun was---and still is---my trusty GP-100, and I'd never trade it in. I only wish Ruger would make a model just like the GP-100, only chambered in .44 Magnum! 0
