rangefinder help

am looking to purchase a new rangefinder. currently, i have a bushnell which is junk. i have been considering a lecia or a nikon with max. yardage of 800. anyone have any input on these models or perhaps another brand that is reliable?

  The Leica is my first choice for both range finders and binoculars (I have had a 8X42 TRINOVID for years). In the case of the Leica range finders it is hard to believe that a 10 ounce device of about 4X10X2 inches can do so much with so little effort by its owner. I think some of the better features are the armored body, the fast ranging (about 1 second), high accuracy, and the simple fact that it uses 9 volt batteries instead of those expensive photo batteries which can be a pain to locate if you are out in the boondocks. In my opinion these compact laser range finders have made the older ranging reticles on scopes a waste of time and money- just push a button and the machine gives you the EXACT range within 1 meter or less. I have no hands on experience with the Nikons, although I am sure that they are good units as Nikon makes good optics.

  I have a Nikon Buckmaster 800, 8 x 28, for the most part it has been a fine unit, readings out to 500 yards are a snap, you can get readings all the way out to 800 but you had better have a good target to bouce off of. It did quit on me one time but i believe that to be my fault, I was shooting off the bench and believe the muzzle blast got to it, any way I sent it back to Nikon and they replace the unit at no charge.
  The only thing I don't like about it is that its very hard to pick up a target up close like in bow hunting. for the money its really a pretty darn good unit

  What model is your Bushnell?, I was thinking of getting their 800 compact model, but now im not sure i want too.

  to mx237 : my bushnell is a model 800 compact. the problem i have had on several occassions is it will throw an error code for some reason. i think it has to do with reflective and non-reflective subjects. the leica model lrf 800, from what ive been hearing is of much better quality,and price as well.

  I was in a postion of not knowing which rangefinder to buy also. One of my friends had a Lecia 800, the other a bushnell. Both were very satisfied with their units. After using both, there is no comparison on the optics & ranging. Lecia wins easly, of course your talking $100+ more, but in the long run, I think it's worth it. I bought a Lecia, & really like it. See if you can "beg, borrow, or steal" a Lecia for a few days to decide for your self. That's what I did.
