That's a very difficult and subjective question to answer. My experience has been with the early Chinese imports and has been positive with regard to function and accuracy. Many people prefer the other makers/variations. Here is a excellent site that goes into great detail regarding most of the currently available AK clones.

I concur about the early Chinese ones because I still have one and love it. I have had or shot all the other that have ben offered since the early 1980s and I will say that if you can find one that is pre-ban then that is what I would go with. They will cost more but in my opinion they are worth it. Just my 2 cents worth.[8D] 0 -
I hate to be a wet blanket, but what is your friends budget for this project? It won't do much good for us to recommend things like PolyTech Legends and Hungarian and Yugoslavian prebans if he can't spend more than $400! Does he want to spend the cash needed to go preban or will he settle for a post ban rifle? There are at least a dozen choices available so you will need to norrow the field a bit for us.

SAR 1 rocks. Price ain't bad neither. Money not an problem go with a Norinco with a MILLED not STAMPED receiver. Oh yeah![:D]

Budget is limited to $500. Another question, should he be looking for a milled or stamped receiver? 0 -
Romainian SAR1 from J&G Sales or Century Arms International or Southern Ohio Guns or online here at GB, this will run about $300.00 (+/- $50.00) take the remainding $200 and get a 1,000-1,420 round case of ammo. Then go get another $150.00 and buy a 75 round drum mag and several more regular 30 round mags.
Just be VERY careful that you do not end up buying a "WASR-10". This is a model of AK that ONLY accepts 10 round single stack mags.

There has been much debate about stamped vs. milled receivers on AKs. Milled is heavier, stamped makes gun a little lighter. I have had both and the one I kept of the many that I have had over the years is a stamped Norinco Chinese model. I prefer stamped. I have shot thousands upon thousands of rounds through stamped reciever AKs and have yet to wear one out. I would check with SOG to see if they have any in stock. They are sold out of about all semi-autos. I have a cetme on back order. 0 -
Strang, I have a WASR-10 that accepts hi-caps. I do not see any signs of modification either. 0 -
From my understanding...the AK was made to use a stamped receiver. It is less costly to make and does make it lighter...just part of the overage equation when the gun was developed.

Alex, I believe it was the AKS that was designed to use the stamped receiver. They were cheaper and easier to manufacture. Also, go with the SAR-1, real good shooters and under/around $300, can't beat it.
