SKS--????
First,i know absolutely nothing about them.I saw one today that had a triangular figure and what appears to be Chinese figures on the receiver.Everything, including the stock had the number 006xx stamped on it.The guy who had it knows as much as i do.It appears to be in new condition. Is it a Norinco? He wants 200 for it.Is that a fair price?I have been thinking of buying one to play with, but am not sure which one to buy or how much to pay.I would appreciate any info.Thanks.

It is a Norinco SKS. $200 is a decent price for one in new condition. They are good reliable SKS rifles. Be sure to detail clean it before use, Q-tips usually help expedite the cleaning process on the SKS. I'd grab it if I were in your shoes.

I would not buy it! Yugoslav "MILITARY" issue SKS's are selling for $125 in the "Shotgun News". A lot of those Chinese SKS's were made for commercial sale in the U. S., not for military use. For my money, they were out to make a quick buck out of them, specially near the end, when "SLICK WILLIE" was fixing to choke them off. 0 -
Yes there are cheaper SKS's out there, but $200 for a "like new" Norinco is a good price.
OSS- by the way, as Rufe-snow pointed out, you can get "like new" Yugo SKS rifles for less if you are interested.

Yugo SKS do not come with chrome lined barrel.
I would suggest to buy a chrome lined barrel SKS.
Why?
If you are planning to shoot cheap military surplus ammo which have lacquered steel cases, steel bullet jackets and corrosive primers, you will ruin the Yugo SKS barrel very quickly.
Yugo SKS was NOT made to shoot that type of ammo.
I've been gunsmithing Yugo SKS's for 14 years and I'm telling you this out of my own experience from a military use of that rifle during Croatian war for independence 1990-95, and from a civil use (hunting) after the war.
If you wish an SKS rifle, invest a bit more money, buying one with a chrome line barrel. You will save money on a long-term basis.

Fer 200 bucks; almost ANY sks will do. Hulvin seems to have the tightest grip on the situation-I'd listen to what he said as I plunked down my cash fer the one your friend has. Then I'd look fer a chromed-barrel unit.
I own many sks variants, have sold the ones that were too much trouble, and don't regret buying any of 'em!
If you know it all; you must have been listening.WEAR EAR PROTECTION!0 -
If you want to something unique, get an Albanian SKS. I have one and I really like it although its pretty heavy. I believe they have chrome lined bores. The accuracy is pretty decent with the Silver Bear match ammo from AIM surplus. I am gonna shoot it again later to do more accuracy testing. The stock and metal will need some work and is going to make a fun project gun. Also, the trigger pull is hard and nasty and needs some work. 0 -
OSS,I would go for the Norinco. If you are reading that serial number right it sounds like a real old one.

Hey, buy one of those chinese star magazines. Really sharp, holds 20 rounds and take stripper clips. Go to
http://www.impactguns.com/store/sks_20rd_fixed_mag.html
to nab one. Also check around on gunbroker for those selling stripper clips and grab yourself about 20 of em. Then all you need is some 7.62x39 ammo. Most people will tell you Wolf cause its cheap and pretty good, but if you wanna be cool like me get the Silver Bear Match Grade stuff. It has a little nipple on the end and some cool looking cases.

Sell 1000 rounds of the stuff for lke 85 bucks. Shipping was about 20 bucks.0
