I think what you have is a Combat Commander. Same size as the original Commander Mmodel but with a steel frame rather than alloy. I looked up your number in Wilson's book on Colts but I must be missing it. The 1979 models start about 20,000 higher than your number but I don't see your number range listed in 1978. So I guess it is around 1978-79.

In good condition (maybe 95% of its original finish and no mechanical problems) I would guess that $650 is about right. This gun is not rare and it is not particularly old and without the original box it would not interest a serious collector too much. I see these trading at $500 and up but prices can vary and it all depends on who is trying to buy one and how much they are willing to offer. If I were trying to sell this gun I would list it at $650 and see what happens.

I don't think anyone is trying to take advantage of you. Dealers have to offer wholesale for guns so that they can mark them up to retail. Are you a gun dealer? You say that you just bought this and don't know what to ask for it. Sounds like you bought it just to sell it. You might want to invest in some of the gun value books to give you a general idea of where to start on pricing. I hear that the ATF is cracking down in some areas on unlicensed gun dealers so if you don't have an FFL I would cool it on buying guns for resale. Or at least talking about it on a public forum like this one.
