how do you remove the magazine tube and the magazine throat from this shotgun. It was my Fathers???

Can I replace the original 2 3/4" full choke 30" plain barrel with a 2 3/4" skeet choke 26" vent rib barrel on a winchester model 1400 semi-auto? Thanks guys, Frank 0 -
Yes. All the 1400 bbls are interchangeable.
I have used these guns a lot and really like them. Just keep the gas system clean and you should have no probs.

Earndawg, the barrels are interchangeable, But if the skeet barrel is a factory "skeet", the vent rib will not match the receiver. The skeet and trap models have an rib extension on the receiver. So, you will be looking at the end of the rib. Everything else will work fine. 0 -
If it were me, I'd look for one with a Win-choke so you can change the chokes as the need changes. Also, I'd double what Vince said. If I'm not mistaken, if yours is a plain barrel there won't be any grooves on top of the receiver (the start of the vent-rib), so I'd think they would all stick up some.
These are nice well-balanced guns. I've been suprised they never gained the popularity of the Remington 1100's, maybe it was because of the lower shell capacity - who knows?

Thanks guys, I was wondering about the vent rib sticking up like that. I don't have a 1400 but I was thinking about getting one with a plain barrel( because they seem to be the most common )and putting the skeet barrel on it. A friend of mine let me use his to go shoot a round of sporting clays for the first time and I shot a 84 out of 100 and I fell in love with that gun. I can't find one anywhere and I can't talk him out of his. I know there are better guns out there for this purpose but I never had a gun feel this good in my hands! If anyone knows where I can find one let me know. Thanks, Frank 0 -
Since you haven't already got one, I'd save the time/money and just get one with a vent rib and Win-choke setup, the book value for it is $300 for both the VR and Win-choke. Indeed, they are a very well balanced gun. Another gun with a nearly identical setup and balance is the Ithaca/SKB XL300 and XL900 series. They aren't really any cheaper, but they are slightly lighter and hold more rounds. My brother-in-law has the 1400 still. I'll ask him if he's interested in selling it - I doubt it, but I'll ask.

Earndawg, do you have a "skeet" barrel for the 1400? There is a 1400 in a gun shop near here for sale. I think it is a 28" Modified, plain barrel. As I said before, you will be looking at the back end of the rib (about 1/8" tall). This gun is in pretty nice shape, (a few scratches on wood) and probably could be bought for $235-$250. I saw a 1400 skeet gun at a show last year. $225.00 and no takers. It had a pretty piece of wood on it. I had forgotten about the "target" guns having the rib extension back on the rec. On the one I shoot the most I placed a sheet metal shim between the stock and the receiver to raise the point of impact.
I have a deer bbl, 26" imp cyl and 28" mod. Brownells still lists the Winchoke tubes.
I wonder what the going rate is for reaming and tapping a bbl for screw in chokes ??
The rec is alloy on these guns so get familiar with disassembly. Keeping the grit out and a little lube will keep it shooting for many years.
