.45 LONG COLT ammunition compatability question

Do you have a large supply of 11mm Corto on hand and want to shoot it in your 625? I don't understand why you want to know this. But if it's really important I would suggest getting a copy of Cartridges of the World and comparing the outside dimensions. But then, there are other considerations like the rim thickness (that can have an effect on headspacing) and pressures. Do you know how hot these other rounds are loaded?

I can tell you that 45 ACP in moon clips cannot be used in a 45 Colt revolver because of the thickness of the rim/clip. Shortened 410 shells sounds like a lot of work to get what? An underpowered shotgun shell fired from a short, rifled barrel? That should work real well. I have no experience with all of those other European cartridges but as a general rule I think it's best to use ammo made for your gun.

when i purchase or research a firearm, i like to create a file that has the most correct and comprehensive information available. i include brouchures, catalogs, manuals, parts diagrams, reciepts, pet load data, shot targets from the range, historical biographical data, etc...

a friend has a .32-20 rifle that chambers, functions, and fires 7 different distinctive seperate cartridges. my .357 magnum revolver handles 4 catridges. i like to include this information concerning cartridge compatability in my file/report.

we often come across supplies of oddball, obsolete, and hard to find ammunition at the shop. we happen to have a decent stock of 11mm CORTO in house, including black powder blanks. we have either loaded examples or the componants to manufacture most of the rounds listed above. i have already set aside some .45 SCHOFIELD to use at the range.

while it is cost prohibitive to use many of these cartidges, and accuracy may suffer with others, i was simpley curious about the capability of the firearm in question. i certainly would not attemp to use a round that was to hot, incorrectly headspaced, or dangerous in any other fashion in this gun. i hoped that perhape ICONCLAST, CAPTAIN KIRK, IROQUIOS SCOUT, or MARK CHRISTIAN might shed some light on this question, or have some historical data on the subject. beat regards, mike.

Not trying to irritate you and sorry that none of those other fellas you were looking for have shown up yet. You know, if as many as seven cartridges are interchangeable, then they really aren't different, are they? They are really the same except for the name. Sort of like the 7MM Rem. Express and the .280 Rem. Same thing except for the name. Just a thought. What four cartridges can be used in a .357 (other than the .357 & .38 Spl), by the way?

Doing all that reserach and recordkeeping would be too much like work or school for me. You must be a CPA, or something. I just make sure the number on ammo box matches the number on the gun barrel and let it go at that. Different strokes.

    Mrmike08075,
With the exception of the auto-rim and the mooned autos, at least most of the cases you mention have a base diameter that would fit more or less loosely. The Montenegrin has a base of .490" and would not likely chamber. The autos would not seat home because of the rim thickness; the .45 Auto Rim has a .089" rim thickness as compared to the .060" .45 Colt. The rim thickness varies from .036" in the .450 Short to .089" in the Auto Rim. I do not know how they did it in Montenegro. The thin rimmed versions would not likely cause headspace problems and would likely fire, unless the firing pin was unusually short.
I can't say if all .45's will chamber in a Colt single action as compared to other revolvers, but the cylinder diameter is smaller than more recent revolvers and will chamber the wider rims only in alternate chambers. The Gummit encountered that problem with the 1906 and 1909 .45's.
    Cheers from Grayest California,
    Ross

it is not always the case that interchangable compatable cartridges are the same, only different in name. my friends .32-20 rifle chambers and shoots the following cartridges:
    .32-20 WINCHESTER
    .32 S&W SHORT
    .32 S&W LONG
    .32 COLT
    .32 LONG COLT
    7.5 NAGANT REVOLVER
    .310 GREENER CADET
.32 AUTOMATIC (safe to shoot, but the spent case must be pushed out via cleaning rod)

the differences in these rounds are more then name alone.
as to my .357 revolver it will chamber the .38 S&W, .380-200 BRITISH, .38 COLT NEW POLICE, &.38 SPECIAL.

will colt supply alternative cartridge cylinders to better fit some of these rounds??? does the custom shop offer this service??? i know that ruger, freedom arms, and others offer this option. it would be nice to have a two or three cylinder set to allow the use of a wide range of cartidges in one gun. best regards, mike.

Shooting the 38 S&W and 38/200 British (same save for name) in a 357 or 38 Special is probably unwise if they even chamber. The bore diameter on the 38 S&W & British is .360 vs .357 for the magnum & special. You may get away with it but I would not call these cartridges proper or interchangeable. I still think it is best to use the correct ammo rather than making lists of what can be forced into the chamber.

    mrmike08075,

Regarding the .357, I concur with Ampersand. Here's a link that you may want to check out for cartridge dimensions and other info:

Mike, given your interest in interchangeability, I would suggest you attempt to locate a copy of The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions by John Donnelly, ISBN 0-88317-138-4 (hardbound - it was also published in paperback and spiral bound), 1987 by Stoeger. It gives excellent dimensional data on hundreds of cartridges. Definitely out of print, but very helpful on handgun cartridges, is Pistol and Revolver Cartridges by White and Munhall, no ISBN in my copy, printed 1967 by A.S. Barnes & Co., but the Library of Congress number at the time was 66-30444. Between these two, you ought to be able to determine the theoretical interchangeability of most all factory designs.

i want to thank everyone for thier input on this post. i intend to contact colt directly and find out what they have to say on the subject. i also have ordered the first book that ICONCLAST suggested, and checked out the recomended web site. this was not a subject i would have been interested in several years ago, but my curiosity has been spurred on by the amazing .32-20 rifle, and its capacity to chamber and shoot an awe inspiring cornacopia of cartridges. that combined with the purchase of a dual-cylinder revolver that chambers and shoots the .22s, .22l, .22lr, .22wrf, and the .22 win. mag. have piqued my intrest in this subject, as it pertains to modern firearms, as well as historical pieces. i was lucky enough to get a factory letter on my .22 revolver in which the manufacturer listed all of the compatable and safe cartridges which could be employed in either cylinder. i hope colt will be as forthcoming. i am told that freedom arms has a 5 cylinder revolver that chambers and shoots 9 different cartridges on the drawing table.

i did find the following site wich may intrest some of you. its the SAAMI technical data sheet on cartidges that should never be interchanged, or attempted to chamber and fire.
    http://www.saami.org/unsafe3.htm
i have printed it out for quick referance, and bookmarked it. best regards, mike.

I forgot about the 38 Super in a 357 magnum. I read somewhere that it will chamber and fire.
