Remington 700 Classic (.257 Roberts) Stainless?

I purchased a Remington 700 Classic (.257 Roberts) Stainless rifle a while back. I put this gun up to keep because I was told it was a super rare gun. Could anyone tell me anything about this gun? I know very little about it. I would like to know the estimated value and if possible how many they made along with year of manifacture. It has the original box and looks to have never been fired. The stock on the other hand has some microscopic fratures in the finish but is like brand new. What causes the stokcs to do this? If this hurts the value what can be done to fix the problem without further hurting the value. Thanks
