how to remove model 1100 butt stock

i have a model 1100 12ga Special Field. i want to shorten the stock, add a decent recoil pad - Remingtons aren't- and refinish the stock. how do i get the dumb thing off? special tool? unknown trick of the trade? HELP?!?!?[:(]

  Remove the buttplate. Look in the hole in the butt end of the stock and you will see a slotted nut. Use an appropriate tool (there are specialized tools for this purpose, but careful application of a makeshift tool would work) to unscrew that nut. The stock will now slip straight rearward away from the receiver. Do not lose the stock plate between the wood and the rear of the receiver, or the lock washer.

  First look at the recoil pad on end use a philips screwdriver the top screw is 1/4 from top ,the bottom screw is about 1 inch from bottom
  Use the screwdriver to probe for the holes in the pad then make sure you fully seat the driver do not strip these
  Then follow blacks advice

  Before you remove the stock,and after you have removed the recoil pad, measure from the end of the stock, to the end of the sloted nut.
  Be sure you don't cut more off the stock, than this distance, you measured, or the sloted nut, will hit the recoil pad!
