.357 revolver fouling

hi again, i recently aquired a ruger security six revolver. the owner before me was not that tidy about cleaning after shooting. there is considerable fouling in cylinder as well as in the barrel(i hope no pitting) that i wish to get rid of. i have tried serveral methods like solvents and rubbing compounds, but nothing seems to work. i have been told that soaking it in kerosene may help. anyone have any ideas???

  Sounds like you need a good stiff brush. I have used the stainless tornado type brushes for that purpose with some sucess.

  my suggestion is blue wonder cleaner, let it sit for a half hour then use a bronze brush,repeat as needed, works for me.,

  I'd avoid stainless brushes. They may actually be harder than the bbl.
  Try shooting with jacketed 38's, then clean with standard cleaners...your choice. You might also try aluminum (not steel) wool rolled into a ball. Good luck. Be careful, have fun! Morty

  Hoppes #9, the correct size brush & patches, a little elbow grease and you should be in business. If this doesn't do the trick, you may have some corrosion and/or pitting.

  Blue Wonder Cleaner is very good. There's also something called Wipe Out that's supposed to be ideal for tough jobs. You might also use some small pieces of Chore Boy to remove leading after getting it loosened up with Blue Wonder.

  I have had to put my bronze brush in my cordless drill to get all the buildup out of a few trap guns, but don't know if it would hurt rifling.

  Get a Lewis lead remover in 38 caliber. It is just the thing for removing cylinder buildup.

  Try Blue Wonder....pay particular attention to the cylinder. If the former owner fired a lot of .38 Spl. you may have some ridge build-up in there.

  Like PEARYW says, get a LEWIS LEAD REMOVER. No solvent or brush will remove the lead like a LEWIS will, and it will not harm bore or chambers.

  I like JB Bore Paste for those really tough cleaning chores (sounds like a laundry detergent commercial doesn't it?) Takes a little work, but it works well and will not damage your cylinders or bore. I am also partial to Butch's Bore Shine for regular cleaning.
