N.R. Davis & Sons

I recently aquired a 12ga. side by side shotgun.
It is a N. R. Davis & Sons. The only other thing stamped on it is the number 36, on the underside of the barrel, on the metal part of the fore end and on the receiver.
Can you tell me anything about this gun?

The gun is in fair condition.

  Jay, N R Davis shotguns were manufactured for the low-end buyer many years ago, and are comparable to Crescent doubles make under the Crescent and "house brand" names. They are sturdy, blocky guns, and if yours has steel barrels, are safe to shoot. However, they have no collector value.

  Good Evening: The N.R. Davis Company was located in Freetown, Mass. 1853 to 1917. Merged with Warner Co., of Norwich, Conn. and became Davis-Warner Arms Company. It was not active between 1920-1922, but started up again in 1930 as the CRESENT-Davis Arms Co.,Norwich. This included Cresent Firearms company. They relocated in Springfield, Mass. 1931-1932 and were taken over in late 1932 by Stevens Arms....

  Thanks for the info. I think it will look good on the wall!
  Might shoot it once in awhile, but I'm really not a shotgun fan. I prefer .270 Win. for everything....

  If it is in good condition (locks up tight) it certinly isn't a wall hanger.
  I had a Davis sxs 20ga when I was in high school many many years ago (50).
  I used it for bird hunting. After carrying my Browning 12 A-5 at 8# + for more than a 1/2 day I would switch to the old Davis.
  I shot both high and low brass in it and a lot birds went to the dinner table.

  Jay,Let me know if you would be interested in parting with it.I use to shoot my grandpa's Davis and loved it. It has long disappeared within the family somewhere. Just go to members at top of page , type in my name and email.

  It isn't in the best shape. I have to replace the wood on the fore end, the fore end locking tang needs to be replaced, it was broken, the trigger guard was broken and poorly repaired. So, this is one that I want to repair for the practice. With the time I will have in it, I don't think I will part with it. It closes tight and should fire just fine. Maybe I'll have to try clays or pheasant hunting, I don't care for the taste of ducks....
