To answer your quastion No
Look at the diagram
.308 bullet is almost identical to the NATO 7.62x51mm and in most cases the rounds are interchangeable. Winchester released the .308 Win a number of years before the U.S. Army adopted the 7.62x51mm NATO and the specifications do have a slightly different dimension for the headspace. This might play a role when shooting .308 commercial bullets from a rifle chambered for 7.62x51mm.

According to Cartridges Of The World by Frank Barnes 8th edition the .308 is nothing more than the NATO 7.62x51 military round.
It was introduced by Winchester in 1952 and adopted by NATO in 1954.

I contacted some of the manufacturers on this a year ago.
Browning, Savage, Armalite, and Springfield have all stated that their guns are designed to safely shoot both the nato 7.62x51 and the commercial .308. If you contact Winchester, Remington ect, you will probably get the same answer.

I asked a Browning rep., by phone,
if it was safe to use the 7.62x51mm in the Browning 308 BLR. He seemed to hedge saying, that any SAAMI
certified cartridges were ok to
use in Browning fireaems.
Then is the NATO cartridge within
SAAMI specs?0
