Colt Mark III Vent Rib barrel issue revisited
Sorry, I could not let this issue die with the previous closed thread!
I did a little research and find that the Mark V has a small round butt frame under the stocks. The Mark III has a large square butt frame under the stocks. That would be an easy thing for the owner to check and post here just to eliminate that issue.
The 1982 Colt catalog contains both the Mark III and the Mark V so the theory, supported by two owner accounts, that the Mark V barrel could have been put on a Mark III at the close of production is very likely. Strangely, the 1982 price list does not price the Mark III, so there were probably no new Mark III revolvers in 1982. HOWEVER, the Mark V revolvers pictured in the 1982 catalog DO NOT have vent rib barrels!
Cancel that HOWEVER, however, because the 1983 catalog does show the Mark V with vent rib barrels. It is also interesting that the 1984 catalog makes reference to the "new" Mark V, implying the Mark V is just new in 1984. Strange, but typical Colt.
I was wrong in saying that the Mark III had rubber stocks. Some did, most did not.
I wonder if Colt records would show anything special about the barrel on this revovler?

Well, I took the grips off and checked under them, and Yes, the frame is Squared. I took a pic of it anyway and updated a few more to my web page at http://community.webshots.com/album/65612726WYNoPD
. It has writing on the inside of the grips that say: Colt J Frame....CJ........Small Grip.And on the bottom of the grips, it says Pachmayr Presentation Grip.

Yep, Picture titled "357 right side" definitely shows the ramp on top of the barrel leading out to the muzzle where the sight blade is installed into a machined recess........
There are no doubts in my mind this barrel is a MK V barrel with a MK III roll mark.....very interesting gun! I was told if you live long enough you will see everything......How about it Judge?
Probably going to see an "Over/Under" Detective Special next!!!!

I give up! A Mark III with a Mark V barrel with a Mark III rollstamp (whew!) is the only conclusion I can reach. The fact that two others report the same thing is good enough for me to conclude there are a few of these that were made by Colt.
I would still be interested to see what the factory letter says, if anything, related to this issue. I think a letter for this revolver would be $75.00, well worth it when something so unusual comes up.
That pesky 10-round limit applies to the Experts section as well as our magazines. Sometimes, that is just not enough. I think we have finally resolved this one before reaching the second magazine limit and having to reload again.0 -
Guy's, Once again, Thanks. I will seek the letter from Colt, and reply back what is written to me. I didn't want to reply back too much after learning about the 10 response deal. ( And to think, I was considering trading it in, or selling it [:0] ) That wouldv'e been hard to do anyway, because I've had it for so long, and like the gun. One of those wild hairs I guess. 0
