Remington 870 barrel selection?

To the best of my knowledge, you'll need to stick with a 2 3/4 barrel. A 26" or maybe even 28" imp. cyl would probably be the best choice for birds. When you say birds, I'm assuming you mean dove, quail, etc. (small, fast, game birds) I wanted to share an idea with you though. You could pick up a remington 870 express shotgun for not much more than you're gonna pay for a replacement barrel, and the 870 express will come with screw in choke tubes. It comes with a modified only I think, but you can pick up an imp. cyl. and a skeet choke for it for another $15 or so each. Wally world sells the 870 express in my area for $249 and after the tax and 2 additional chokes, you should be able to keep it under $300. The 870 express isn't the prettiest and most lavish gun remington ever produced, but it's a versatile little sucker for what it sounds like you need. Just a thought.......

Per the 2003 Remington catalog, page 35:

Model 870 extra barrels with 3" chambers used on Super Magnum and Magnum receivers will handly both 2&3/4" and 3" shells only. Use only 2&3/4" shells when these barrels are used on non-Magnum receivers.

    Hope this answers your question.

steve45, on you standard wingmaster, you can install any 870 bbl even if it is marked for 2 3/4 or 3 inch. You can get used high gloss fixed choke barrels for $50-$100, and used Rem choke bbl for $80-$140. The best all around choke is Modified. With the requirement of steel shot for waterfowl, most shoot one or two choke sizes larger (full lead = mod steel, mod lead = imp steel). That said, I use Imp Cyc for most everything...duck,dove,qual,skeet. Check out www.hewittgunshop.com ,they have a large selection of new and user bbls.

raskil has the correct answer , another place to check for used barrels are pawn shops and one of the best places is e b a y , just type in Remington barrels in your search, I just sold a 30" full choke and a 26 " skeet over there both went around the $100 mark

Hello, there is one barrel that WON'T work on that reciever (outside of the 16 guage, 20 guage {both standard and light weight}). That would be the Special Field 12 guage barrel.
