I am trying to find out the value of a Remington 12 Gauge Sportman 58.

Any Ideas on how to go about it or on the possible value itself?

The Sportsman 58 is a gas operated gun whereas the 48 is a long- recoil operated piece. Like you, I have a 48 that I've shot since 1951 at skeet and game. In three years (I estimated at one time in the past) I had run 15,000 shells through it.I don't think that it's worn out, it just got slicker. The 58's were an attempt (looks like) to make a gas-operated autoloader out of the 870. There aren't many better feeling shotguns to me than the 58. However, they were in my experience, prone to break extractors, and action bars, until Remington made the action bars and part of the bolt a one piece assembly. I used to carry an extra extractor in my wallet which you could change out with a pocket knife in the field if you had to. The 12 gauge gun was worse in this respect than the 20. I still have both guns and shoot the 20 for doves and skeet. I don't shoot the 12 very much but I know it has had many thousands of rounds run through it, skeet, ducks, and doves. Not as many as my 48, but at one time I only had the 48 for my shooting. If your gun has the one piece action bars/bolt assembly and is otherwise sound I think you'll get pretty good service out of it. Have a good shotgun gunsmith check it out and verify that its got the later parts and I think you'll be OK. There is a guy that used to advertise 58 parts in the GUNLIST, and still does I think, if you find that you need some parts.
    Good Luck,

Wow thanks for the response. Sets my mind at ease. I sold my 48 to a guy who wanted a project gun, bluing was gone, finsih on the stock was worn off. Still shot but only ejected the sheels half the time.

Good info on the extractor, I will have that checked out.
