Reminton 742
I know this is most likely an incredibly stupid question, however, if this rifle were to be "professionally tuned and accurized", what exactly would they have done to it?

I dont know the answer and its just my opinion but i wouldnt spend the money to accurize this rifle. None of the gun shops around here will accept the 742 on a trade. Something to do with unavailable parts or something, maybe someone else knows what the problem is with them.Also, the one i sold used to jam all the time on Remingtom ammo. 0 -
I would think you'd be looking at things like having it recrowned, some trigger work done . . .
You do have to keep these guns clean, esp. the chamber, or they will jam regularly.

From what I have experienced...The rotating bolt is guided front to back by rails milled in the top of the receiver... Either these rails were of insufficient depth and /or width...?? not sure which one ..or both..Anyway... The rotating bolt wears the rails, jumps out of the rails, and just generally wears them and burrs them up until the bolt wont slide any more... Repair would most likely require replacement of the receiver. At one time..I was told... Remington would replace the 742 witha 7400 if you sent them the old gun and an amount of $$.. I don't recall how much...THIS OFFER IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE...DON"T CALL REMINGTON!!!! I would not only NOT put any money into accurizing a 742, but would hang it on the wall.. 0 -
These guns don't wear out overnight. I have talked to people who wore out a couple of 742s happily shooting game. I have one in excellent condition in .30-06, the carbine length barrel, and it is a perfectly nice rifle, though the mags vastly prefer modern ammo to surplus, which doesn't feed properly from them. Eventually, I am told, the type of bolt wear described above will occur with use. On the other hand, they are more accurate than, say, an AK, and more powerful as well. While I wouldn't bother to scope an AK, the scope on my 742 is quite practical. The 742 got a bad rep because of what happens to their insides after they wear for a while. If you've got one in like new condition, and shoot it lightly, you may not live long enough to see it jam. If you want a plinker, buy a 10/22 or an M1 Carbine or even a Mini-30 and have a fine old time. If you want to put an accurate shot downrange a considerable distance, the 742 may do you just fine.

I wouldnt argue the point of accuracy of a 742, I shot many deer with mine in 30/06 even a few over 200 yds. My problem with them was the constant jamming in the cold Wisconsin deer season and the fact that i couldnt trade it in. Thats why "I" wouldnt bother accurizing it. If accuracy is your main goal try a Rem Model 700. 0
