Shotgun barrel removal?

Can anyone tell me what is needed to remove the
barrel on a Springfield model 97 pump shotgun?
this is an older model that it screwed to the receiver
not the kind that just takes a 1/2 turn to remove.
I have had it locked into my aluminum jawed barrel vice
and have used a 15 cresent as an action wrench but with
no budge yet, I am afraid I will leave wrench marks if
I use much more force.
Same gun in stevens and savage 67 s also.

  I just had a tough time on a mossberg 395 , i ended up soaking it with penetrating oil for about a week , then i still had to heat it to get it loose. be carefull if you use heat as not to get it too hot or you'll get dis-coloration in the steel and may remove the integrity of it as well. good-luck!

  I had the same trouble with a JC Higgins our local gunsmith told me to put the gun in the deep freeze for a couple of days. sounds crazy but it worked. I removed the wood on mine before I done this but he did not say it was neccessary.

  DirtyRat has the answer for your problem, just keep at it, with the penetrating oil, then the prophane torch.

  THANKS FOR THE FREEZER IDEA 'GAREPP' HAY I'M GOING TO GIVE THAT ONE A TRY......I USE TO SOAK THEN IN DIESEL FOR A WEEK, THEN RAP IT A COUPLE TIMES WITH A BRASS HAMMER TO VIBRATE THE METAL PIECES. THEN USE THE VISE & WRENCH...THIS ALWAYS WOKED FOR ME.....DON'T LIKE TO USE HEAT.....BEST OF LUCK PEOPLE....john....

  Try the freezer idea and then when it comes out of the freezer...heat up the piece with the internal threads before the piece with the external threads warms up.... Sometimes called the "fire and ice" method.... It should work real well on cast iron exhaust manifold bolts too , but my bride won't let me put the diesel engine in the freezer..
