    Sir....putting in my 2cents worth.....If I had a particular weapon reciever that I wanted to Magnaflux, say Ruger, I would call the tech dept of that Mfg. Facility and speak to engeering.....They will probable want to know why you would want to do that ie: is he going to hot load the H out of it or what......be advised some of their material make up are guarded secrets.....BEST OF LUCK......john.....

    Magnafluxing old firearms recievers is a good idea.
    The P14 & 17 enfields made at the Eddystone arsenal spring to mind.
    They had hair line cracking problems in the reciever head rings,
    As did other rifles and shotguns. As you know, the process is great at finding cracks and inclusions in metal parts. It would work on hammers firing pins, any number of gun parts. As for alloys and hardness, This depends on many factors, including but not limited too, Caliber, rifling twist rate, and of course construction material.
    You may or may not prey this information from the maker. They tend to be rather touchy about revealing what they may consider proprietory information and specs. Modern manufacturing techniques and peocesses
    are very stringent and quality control is EXTREMELY tight. This has all but eliminated human error. However, If in doubt or you suspect a problem, magnafluxing can provide the answer.

    orca44mag ...Actually there is a faster way to test for cracks on ferious metals(magnetic)and that is to use 2 strong magnets and iron power. When the magnets are attached and the part is dusted with the iron power a line will show up along the crack. They made colored power to be able to see it better. As I recall magnafluxing requires a soaking in a dye for a long period of time. As far a the types of steels they use I believe they use ASTM4350 and heat treat to around 35 Rc. ...But I'm no expert, just know enough to be dangerous! *G* Good Luck! ...Mark

    mag partical (MT) or dye penatrant (PT) both will work the PT will work on non ferious metals the down side to the PT it is NASTY i have checked a receiver useing a test zyglo you use mt and a black light

    All,
    I was afraid the manufacturer might need to be involved.
    The first gun I wanted to mag-flux is my old Marlin model 53 12 ga.
    From what I've been hearing/reading, there's just not much info to be had on these old workhorses. While mine in particular seems in REAL good condition, I thought it better to be safe than sorry (or dead).
    If y'all know of a good data source for the old Marlins, let me know.

    Since you work at a place that does magnaflux, I assume that this would be a "Government Job" (free).....sure, why not?

    You assume correctly. We also do penetrant inspection as well as some mighty fine precision machining, so i'm good to go...
