Yugoslav SKS

I am curious about the Yugoslav SKS, can it mount a detachable mag, is it reliable? Thanks.

  Didn't get an answer the first time, would a detachable mag make it illegal? How fast can you change them out, look a little more complicated than just a drop out.

  The detachable mag in addition to the bayonet/lug and the grenade launcher would put you at three "evil features" and would classify it as a dreaded "assault weapon". Stick with the fixed mag or get a Norinco if you want an ammo muncher.[;)]

  Just got the latest issue of Gun Tests magazine and they have an article about the Yugo SKS...they rate it as a BUY IT..so I'm guessing they are pretty good. I was looking at them myself. Hope more people answer this...I would like to know myself.

  I bought one from a local shop and am picking it up on wednesday and taking it out for a test run on thursday, I'll let you know how it shoots.

  Is there a way to take off the grenade launcher. If I can't then I wonder how much time it takes to load using stripper clips as opposed to just popping in a new mag.

  With a stripper clip its really quick to reload the mag. The detachable mags take a lot of practice to install quickly because of the "duckbill". The grenade launcher is removable (I believe you have to drive out a pin then unscrew it from the barrel), but half the novelty of the Yugo is that ugly old launcher[;)]

  The aftermarket removable mags are often poor fitting and take a bit of work to get them to feed reliably -- and even then they may not. You can load faster with strippers than you can clear jams. If you want removable mags with an SKS, get one of the Norinco's originally made at the factory to take AK mags. Or skip the SKS and get an SAR-1. Just my opinion.

  I just got one of these on a C&R but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I tried stripper clips and man is it quick to reload! Try loading AK mags with clips and a guide, sheesh! It feels rugged as hell. I too saw the Gun Tests article and they gave it a better rating than the Albanin SKS based on price. The only advantages of the Yugo SKS is it is C&R eligible and more plentiful right now than the other variants, therefore less expensive. However that grenade launcher makes it heavier than a regular SKS. If you want a neat piece of history, buy the Yugo. If you just want a gun with a detatchable mag, get a Norinco or even an AK variant.

  I've got one of these and it shoots much better with the fixed mag. I've tried detachable 10 and 30 round mags. The 10 did ok but the thirty jammed when it got to the second half of the rounds. It shoots fairly accuratly but its nothing speacial.

  Answer to your second question:
  Grenade launcher is screwed on a barrel and secured with a cross pin.
  Drive the pin out, secure the end of a barrel in a heavy vise (use 2 hardwood panels in a vise). Now use strong large pliers to unscrew the grenade launcher. It is often neccessary to apply a heat from a torch if it doesn't loose off.
